‘I haven’t felt so humiliated as an Israeli as I do tonight’: Israeli social media in meltdown over Trump/Iran ceasefire

"It will take us years to repair the political and strategic damage."

Israel had high hopes for the war with Iran. With Donald Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu joining forces, their greatest enemy would undoubtedly finally be obliterated. Sure, Israel would have to face bombardment from Iran for a while, but most Israelis seemed to accept a month or so of hiding in a bomb shelter as a down payment for a future total victory.

Well… it hasn’t worked out like that. Trump’s apparent plan was to kill the Iranian leadership, tell the Iranian people that the “hour of their freedom is at hand“, and then sit back and watch as a new, friendly Iran takes shape.

I don’t know if you’ve seen the news lately, but that didn’t happen. Iran used every molecule of leverage it had against Trump, who has now announced a humiliating provisional ceasefire and ten demands he’s deemed “workable”.

These include “a guarantee that Iran will not be attacked again”, “an end to Israeli strikes in Lebanon and against Iranian allies”, “the lifting of all US sanctions on Iran”, and Iran being able to charge a “$2 million fee per ship transiting Hormuz”.

“There has never been such a political disaster in all of our history.”

As you might imagine, this is not what Israelis signed up for. As the news broke and the implications of what the ceasefire means sunk in, Israeli social media became bleak:

“Remember that you sat 40 days in the shelter just to open a maritime route that has been open since forever.” (translated by X)

“Since October 7th, I haven’t felt so humiliated as an Israeli as I do tonight. This loss is an understatement. Can’t fall asleep.” (translated by X)

“[Netanyahu] had 3 wars to win, and he failed to win even one of them.” (translated by X)

“They sold the State of Israel at a liquidation sale. They left scorched earth. In a proper country, not only would they not be elected again, they’d be hauled in handcuffs to investigation committees. The legacy of Netanyahu. Failure. Death. Corruption. Lies.” (translated by X)

Senior Israeli politicians are also deeply miserable. Yair Lapid, former prime minister of Israel and current leader of the opposition, said:

“There has never been such a political disaster in all of our history. Israel wasn’t even at the table when decisions were made concerning the core of our national security. The military carried out everything that was asked of it, the public demonstrated amazing resilience, but Netanyahu failed politically, failed strategically, and didn’t meet a single one of the goals that he himself set. It will take us years to repair the political and strategic damage that Netanyahu wrought due to arrogance, negligence, and a lack of strategic planning.” (translated by X)

Iranians are currently partying in the streets of Tehran as they celebrate what they consider a victory over the “Great Satan” that is America. Meanwhile, Israelis are emerging from their shelters to grimly realize that their greatest enemy is not only still around, but may soon be far more powerful than before the war.

What this means for Benjamin Netanyahu personally is unknown, but perhaps we can hope that the criminal corruption trial against him finally reaches a conclusion.
