‘We cannot sit idly by’: Donald Trump labelled as the very threat he set out to undo

The nightmare he promised to end.

Senator Jack Reed, the ranking member on the Senate Armed Services Committee, recently slammed President Trump for a Truth Social post where the president threatened that Iranian “civilization will die tonight.” Reed stated that Trump’s post goes far beyond what any president should ever say or do, equating the threat to eliminate a civilization with genocide.

This kind of rhetoric, he said, is illegal, immoral, and simply shouldn’t be part of an American president’s vocabulary. The ominous sentiment Trump suggested, according to Reed, would indeed be a criminal act. According to The Hill, Reed went on to say that the president’s current behavior is actively setting back any chances of achieving a peaceful ceasefire in the region.

Our allies, he pointed out, are no longer just skeptical; they are genuinely shocked and appalled by these comments. They simply can’t tolerate even the suggestion of such actions, let alone the behavior Trump is talking about. Reed believes the president isn’t focused on realistically ending this conflict, and it seems he might have lost control. In a stark comparison, Reed asserted that Trump has become as fanatical as the regime leaders in Tehran.

I think he hit the nail on the head

Trump’s provocative message on Truth Social, posted close to 12 hours before his deadline for Iran to make a deal, declared that “a whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again.” He added a chilling caveat, saying, “I don’t want that to happen, but it probably will.” The president then mused about the possibility of something “revolutionarily wonderful” happening.

Per BBC, many other Democrats also took to social media on Tuesday to criticize the president’s remarks, with a significant number calling the threats illegal. Some have even gone as far as to demand impeachment proceedings.

Senator Ed Markey, for example, posted on X that “The House must bring up impeachment articles, and the Senate needs to remove a president who wants to commit war crimes. We cannot sit idly by as Donald Trump threatens to end an entire civilization.”

The White House was quick to dismiss these responses and calls for impeachment as “pathetic.” White House spokesperson Davis Ingle characterized the Democrats in Congress as “deranged, weak, and ineffective,” attributing their low approval ratings to these perceived traits.

Meanwhile, the international community has also weighed in on Trump’s alarming threats. The UN Secretary General, António Guterres, expressed being “deeply troubled” by statements that suggest entire populations would bear the consequences of political and military decisions.

Pope Leo XIV, the first American leader of the Roman Catholic Church, finally took a firm stand against his strategy to condemn the threats. He told journalists that such a threat against all the people of Iran is “truly unacceptable.” He highlighted that beyond questions of international law, it’s fundamentally a moral question. Interestingly, his comments then led to the Pentagon threatening him.

An Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Esmaeil Baqaei, responded to Trump’s threats with defiance. Baqaei posted on X, stating, “The power of a ‘CIVILIZED’ nation’s culture, logic, and faith in its righteous cause will undoubtedly prevail over the logic of brute force.”

The U.S-Israeli conflict against Iran has now entered its second month, and we are currently in a fragile ceasefire. Iran responded to America’s 15-point proposal with a 10-point proposal that Trump has called negotiable. Part of the demands was the cessation of attacks against Iran and all their allies.

In an unsurprising twist, though, despite Israel claiming that they supported the peace talks, they unleashed the worst strike against Lebanon since the start of the war. They argue that Lebanon is not part of the ceasefire.

“We have more goals to complete – and we will achieve them either by an agreement or by renewing the fighting. We are prepared to return to fighting at any moment necessary. Our finger is on the trigger.”
