A California woman who had a successful career as an engineer lost everything after giving up her job to become a “homemaker wife” for her rich husband. Ten years after Sharareh Moazed met Peyman Javaherbin their “marriage” would ultimately fall through. The problem was they were never legally married to begin with.
Moazed, 55, believed that her husband, Javaherbin, 62, would financially support her “for the rest of her life,” at least, that’s what Javaherbin led her to believe. The couple began dating in September 2011 and according to an article from the Daily Mail, he told Moazed that “he was desperately in need of companionship and that he believed that they were meant to be together.” He also told her that he was searching for a “homemaker wife.”
Moazed initially refused the man’s proposal on account of how her family would react to her living with a man with whom she was not married. In court documents she explained that Javaherbin’s solution was a “religious marriage” which would not be recorded. Moazed agreed to go along with the idea believing that they would get legally married after Javaherbin divorced from his previous wife.
Moazed and Javaherbin end their relationship
After 9 years together Moazed made the decision to leave Javaherbin. Her choice came after years of waiting for him to make their relationship official. In 2020 she became tired of waiting and filed for divorce. She believed that she would be financially supported by her soon to be ex-husband and that she would get a share of his fortune but she quickly found that was not the case.
When she brought her claim to court the judge ultimately ruled against her, citing a law which prevents individuals from making a claim for a broken promise to marry. The judge told her that, as they had never officially been married, she had little claim to anything.
Javaherbin had led her to believe numerous times that he was preparing for their life as a couple, even telling Moazed to look for a property for them to purchase and move into. When the 62-year-old did purchase a property in Encino in 2013 he claimed it was for both of them but only had his name put on the property title.
Moazed won’t see any money from the property, which is valued at $2 million, despite being the one to choose it when she was with Javaherbin. She describes it as being, “totally heartbreaking,” adding, “The system is very disappointing.”
Javarherbin had promised to take care of Moazed’s financial needs in exchange for her giving him companionship and taking care of him. She ultimately made the decision to reduce her working hours before finally quitting her job in order to fulfil her end of the deal. But now, after nine years in an unofficial marriage Sharareh Moazed has no choice but to start over.
