Family tucked in 5yo into bed, but when they went to check on her, she was gone. Now the search might have come to a nightmare end

A few moments of inattention, and the child was gone.

The search for a missing 5-year-old girl in Alice Springs, Australia, has reached a devastating conclusion after authorities discovered a body near the Old Timers Camp. According to People, the Northern Territory Police confirmed the discovery on April 30. While a formal autopsy is still pending to confirm the cause of death, authorities believe the remains belong to the young girl. At the request of her family, she is now being referred to as Kumanjayi Little Baby.

The situation escalated quickly following the discovery of the body. Per The Guardian, an angry crowd later clashed with police outside an Alice Springs hospital where the primary suspect, 47-year-old Jefferson Lewis, was being treated after his arrest. The unrest resulted in objects being thrown at officers, police vehicles being set on fire, and authorities deploying tear gas to manage the scene.

On April 26, the girl had been staying at the family home in Alice Springs when she vanished. Her mother had reportedly visited the town camp to use laundry facilities and had tucked her daughter into bed before 11:30 p.m. When the mother went to check on her later, the child was gone. During the initial search, police found doors and fly screens open at the residence, which initially led investigators to believe she might have wandered out on her own.

In Australia’s outback, even wandering is terrifying thanks to the wildlife

The focus of the investigation soon shifted toward Jefferson Lewis, a recently released prisoner with a history of domestic violence convictions. Acting Commander Mark Grieve previously stated that Lewis was staying at the family home at the time the child disappeared, despite not being closely related to them.

As the search intensified, police discovered a yellow shirt worn by Lewis, along with a pair of child’s underwear on a riverbank near the Old Timers Camp. Northern Territory Assistant Police Commissioner Peter Malley noted that forensic testing on the underwear revealed two DNA profiles, one belonging to the girl and the other, likely to Lewis.

Prior to the arrest, Commissioner Malley made a direct appeal regarding the suspect. “The focus right now is to locate Jefferson Lewis, it is our sole job in this investigation right now,” Malley said. He also addressed Lewis directly, stating, “I say to the family of Jefferson Lewis that we believe he’s murdered this child. Do not assist him, get him to the police station and we’ll look after him. And I say to Jefferson Lewis, we’re coming for you.”

Following the discovery of the body, Commissioner Dole expressed the gravity of the situation. He called it “devastating news, not only for the immediate and extended family, but also the first responders, the Alice Springs community, and all those around Australia who have been worrying for this little girl.”

Dole also urged the public to allow the legal process to move forward, acknowledging the pain felt by the community. “I understand that people are grieving and I understand that people are upset, but, please, let the police do their job,” he said.

The girl’s family has shared a deeply personal statement expressing their grief and faith. In a message addressed to her daughter, the mother wrote, “I know you are in heaven with the rest of the family with Jesus and the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Me and your brother will meet you one day. We are giving our lives to Jesus.”

She also shared the perspective of the girl’s brother, Ramsiah, noting, “It is going to be so hard to live the rest of our lives without you. Ramsiah wants to tell you that when he sees you in heaven, he is going to give you the biggest hug ever.”

Lewis was eventually located and arrested at a residence in Alice Springs on Thursday. Commissioner Dole confirmed that Lewis was subsequently transported to Darwin by the police air wing and remains in custody as a significant investigation continues.

Authorities are now preparing to lay charges in connection with the death of Kumanjayi Little Baby, marking the end of a search that involved hundreds of volunteers and extensive ground and aerial sweeps across the region.
