A question about a truck decal spotted on a Los Angeles freeway escalated into what Reddit users are calling “insane detective work,” after a social media post helped connect a distinctive vehicle to an alleged hit-and-run case in the San Fernando Valley.
The thread began on the Los Angeles subreddit when user @chata187 posted a photo of a dark-colored pickup truck spotted on the freeway. The truck bed contained lumber, and across the rear window was a large decal spelling out “MAMALONA.” The caption read, “seen on the freeway. what does MAMALONA mean in this context? also, does he respect wood?”
The term “mamalona” is commonly used in Mexican and Chicano slang to describe something big, powerful, or impressive. In automotive culture, it is often associated with heavily modified pickup trucks that are lifted, customized, or visually striking, sometimes reflecting pride in a vehicle’s size or build.
The reported hit and run
But what began as curiosity about the slang quickly shifted when another Reddit user responded with a concerning theory. One commenter wrote, “Yo bruv, you may have found a vehicle suspected in a hit-and-run. Was this in the Chatsworth area? Sadly, no license plate visible.” The user then linked to a separate post in the r/SFV community showing a similar-looking truck.
That second post, reportedly from a driver in the San Fernando Valley, described a collision that occurred near Lassen & De Soto. The post read,
All black Truck hit my car on Tuesday the 21st near Lassen & De Soto in the Valley. The Decal in the back says ‘MAMALONA.’ Driver stopped for a moment after hitting my truck, then left. I have footage of the truck but no clear license plate. If anyone recognizes this truck or has seen it around the Valley, please let me know. Thanks 🙏”

Several commenters connected the dots, with one stating, “I also think this is the dude who was pulling an empty trailer down the Median on Sunland Blvd and running red lights through Shadow Hills at about 80-100 mph.”
Another user added, “That’s the same truck who hit my car please do you have plates I need to call my insurance nevermind no plates 😞”
A key detail repeated throughout the discussion was that no license plate was visible in any of the available footage or images, making identification significantly more difficult and frustrating those who believe they may have been impacted by the same vehicle.
Case closed?
In a later update, the original poster in the hit-and-run thread returned with an unexpected resolution. The user wrote, “Just wanted to say thank you to everyone in this community who took the time to help. Because of your messages, tips, and people keeping an eye out, I was able to find the person who hit my car. I really appreciate everyone who commented, shared information, or reached out. Thank you all ! I greatly appreciate it !”
While details of how the driver was identified were not publicly disclosed, the update suggests that collective online reporting and community engagement played a role in resolving at least part of the incident, after the distinctive “MAMALONA” decal appeared across multiple sightings.
