California residents furious after overnight military drill brings helicopters, explosions and simulated gunfire to their neighborhood

Some are already crafting conspiracy theories.

A quiet California neighborhood experienced a rude awakening when a U.S. military drill got a little too close for comfort. Residents of Pasadena were subjected to an unwelcome late-night disturbance caused by simulated gunfire, flashbangs, and low-flying helicopters.

The high-stakes training exercise reportedly took place at the closed Saint Luke’s Medical Center. The Pasadena Police Department had initially notified residents that the “controlled explosions” would occur from 5:30 p.m. to 1 a.m. However, residents later complained that the disturbance continued well beyond the timeframe outlined in the notice.

According to The Independent, Rick Cole recorded a video after the announced cutoff time and posted it on social media. The footage showed a white building lighting up with bright flashes and loud bangs. Cole then stepped into frame and explained his frustration with the disruption in a densely populated residential area of California.

On Instagram, Cole pointed out that it was already 2 a.m. and residents living across from the training site had no choice but to endure the noise on a weekday night. He then sarcastically remarked, “Good luck to the people who have got to get up and go to work tomorrow morning.”

Online reactions ranged from concerns that the military’s latest operations were not going well to conspiracy theories involving the current administration’s relationship with the government of Benjamin Netanyahu. One user wrote, “Training exercises… in the middle of the night… in an urban residential area… when they have thousands of miles of isolated property and training facilities built for specific purposes…. Sure that seems totally fine and normal.” Another added, “IDF training US military to prevent an uprising. Got it.”

Incidentally, the Pasadena Police Department was present throughout the exercise. According to reports, local officers were tasked with managing traffic and pedestrian movement during the training operation. Their role was to ensure that, despite residents’ concerns about the noise, the situation did not create any public safety issues.

Meanwhile, as complaints about the Pasadena exercise continued, a similar operation was taking place about 45 miles south in Orange County. According to the report, the Irvine Police Department announced on social media that the military would conduct a controlled training exercise on June 3 near Alton Parkway and Irvine Boulevard from 8 p.m. to midnight.

The reaction on X, however, was notably different from what was seen on Instagram. One user responded to the Irvine Police Department by arguing that residents should be more accommodating of military training. The user wrote, “Why can’t you be proud of the insane skill of the people who fight for your freedoms?” Another user expressed similar contempt toward those complaining about the exercise, writing, “That ‘safe environment for all’ is so you can charge your Tesla while men paid a third of your salary do ballet with RPGs and night vision goggles.”

The Irvine Police Department was also on site to ensure public safety, but that is where the similarities ended. According to reports, the training exercise in Irvine concluded without generating much backlash.
