A video of a California medical practitioner is making the rounds on social media after she alleged that she works a 12-hour shift and then follows it up with gig work on DoorDash. The original post was uploaded to TikTok under the account @itsbirdoclock with the caption, “This country is a joke,” but the video has since been reposted across multiple social media platforms.
One repost on X, in particular, went viral. In the video, the woman says, “I can’t afford gas. I can’t afford groceries. I can’t afford any of my endless other bills.” She then explains that she was out making deliveries at 12:30 a.m. despite already spending the entire day on her feet working.
Naturally, people in the comments were concerned. One user questioned whether she was actually a nurse as most people assumed, writing, “If this is true, she’s definitely not a nurse. A scrub tech, perhaps? Nurses in California make $60+/hr. And if you work for Kaiser, you’re closer to the $80/hr. rate. If she truly is a nurse, either she is living beyond her means or she’s full of shit.” One had a peculiar argument writing, “The country doesn’t entitle you to a cost-of-living wage. And those big-city rents (run by liberals) are oppressive aren’t they? This is liberal big-city problems.”

Others, however, seemed to sympathize with her situation. One user claimed that even pilots are struggling in the current economy, writing, “I’m a pilot. I humped out my time to get my ratings and my license. And I’m struggling like hell.” Some commenters also speculated that personal debt could be contributing to her financial situation.

Still, the original poster’s account has since gone offline, leaving little opportunity for further context that might explain her circumstances. Glassdoor became one of the few available references for average nursing salaries in California in this heated debate. According to the platform, nurses in the state earn an average salary of about $122,623 annually, while rent alone can reach around $2,000 per month, with additional living expenses estimated at roughly $5,430 monthly.
Eventually, the story also took on a political angle, with some users blaming California’s broader economic and housing issues on the state’s politics. One user wrote, “Keep voting Blue. They are the ones that let 10+ illegals into this country. Where did you expect them to live? They drove up rents. But hey, we need transgenders in women sports.”

Hopefully, the original creator eventually returns to provide more context about why she is struggling despite working full-time as a nurse. In the absence of answers, people have started filling in the gaps with their own assumptions.
Whether the issue is student loans, credit card debt, rising housing costs, or some combination of all three, working a 12-hour hospital shift only to spend the night doing gig work does not sound sustainable. More than anything, the story struck a nerve because many people recognized some version of financial exhaustion in it. For some, they simply couldn’t take politics out of it.
