84-year-old Senator Mitch McConnell won’t be returning to work in the near future.
McConnell has been absent from the Senate since mid-June, and there were weeks of silence and speculation before his office finally explained he’d suffered a fall at home that left him “briefly unconscious”.
In addition, he says he suffered a “mild case” of pneumonia, and the lack of information was because “folks of my generation often hesitate to share the vulnerability that comes with growing older”.
“A strenuous course of physical therapy”
McConnell’s office has now provided a positive-sounding update on his condition. He says he’s “working hard” to get back to the Senate and is engaged in “intense physical therapy”.
However, McConnell also confirmed that he will not be making a public appearance at the 146th Annual St. Jerome Fancy Farm Picnic: “There’s no place I’d rather be on the first Saturday in August than with the good people of western Kentucky, feasting on pork and mutton.”
The statement also featured a quote from McConnell’s Attending Physician, saying his time is currently spent in “strenuous” physical exertion as he rebuilds his muscle mass:
“Senator McConnell continues his recovery from a fall at home in June. OAP physicians visit with the Senator every day, discussing all aspects of his rehabilitation care. Since his discharge from hospital care, he has maintained a strenuous course of physical therapy and rehabilitation, including multiple sessions a day designed to rebuild strength and reduce the risk of future falls. His bout with childhood polio continues to be a significant factor in his mobility. He is not yet medically cleared to leave the rehab facility and return to the office.”
This lengthy (and initially unexplained) absence from work has sparked fierce debate over whether McConnell is too old to fulfill his key legislative role in the Senate. For example, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez recently said:
“If he can’t give us an update, he should resign. It’s been very clear to people across KY that his ‘update’ was not sufficient. We need to know if you’re capable of doing the job for the foreseeable future.”
Ocasio-Cortez has also said that elderly and infirm Senators must be transparent about their health issues, pointing out that regular Americans can’t just disappear from their jobs without a good reason:
“I understand that people have a right to medical privacy and to deal with their issues, but we do not have the right to disappear from our jobs without explanation. I don’t think any American has ever experienced the ability to just leave your job for over a month with no explanation to your employer, and we are accountable to the public.”
McConnell has so far missed 38 Senate votes since he was hospitalized. He has confirmed he will not seek re-election and is set to retire from the Senate at the end of his term in January.
