Ghislaine Maxwell is currently serving her sentence for crimes committed alongside Jeffrey Epstein, with a New York jury finding her guilty of the sex trafficking of a minor, along with other consequential charges. Now, senior Democrats are investigating whether she’s receiving preferential treatment behind bars.
Maxwell was sentenced to 20 years in federal prison and to date remains the only person to have been sentenced in relation to Epstein. She was initially imprisoned in FCI Tallahassee but, in August 2025, she was transferred to Federal Prison Camp Bryan, a minimum-security facility in Texas.
Her transfer was highly controversial, coming just a week after two days of meetings with then-Deputy Attorney General Blanche. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse said this “raised questions”, saying in a letter to Blanche:
“Ms. Maxwell was transferred without explanation and in possible violation of standard Bureau policy. Against the backdrop of the political scandal arising from President Trump’s relationship with Jeffrey Epstein, Ms. Maxwell’s abrupt transfer raises questions about whether she has been given special treatment in exchange for political favors.”
Since then, there’s been persistent discussion that Maxwell is receiving unusually special treatment at Bryan. A Nov. 2025 letter from Rep. Jamie Raskin alleged that Maxwell has a special area set aside to receive guests, complete with “an assortment of snacks and refreshments for her guests”. It says she’s treating the warden as “her personal secretary and administrative assistant”.
The reports also allege that Maxwell has access to a laptop, she is given bottled rather than tap water, and she has access to staff-only areas where she’s allowed to watch TV alone. The report even says that an inmate who trains puppies “was instructed to provide one to Maxwell for a time so she could play with the puppy”.
“Deference and servility to Ms Maxwell”
Raskin also said: “The deference and servility to Ms Maxwell have reached such preposterous levels that one of the top officials at the facility has complained that he is ‘sick of having to be Maxwell’s b—h.”
Now Democratic Reps. Robert Garcia and Raskin have visited the Texas prison to see for themselves, but appear to have been stonewalled when it came to Maxwell’s treatment. In a statement, they claimed:
“Bureau of Prisons leadership repeatedly shut down our lines of questioning or could not provide basic information about our central concerns, including Ms Maxwell’s extraordinary treatment, allegations of sexual assault at the facility and retaliation against inmates who tried to blow the whistle. We also have serious concerns about the accuracy and veracity of information received by our investigative staff.”
The Bureau of Prisons has issued a terse response, saying they “went to great lengths to accommodate this visit and spent hours responding to questions from Congressional staff” and that “each of the topics mentioned were addressed to the extent possible”.
The BOP did not specifically address the allegations that Maxwell is receiving special treatment, though her lawyer, David O Markus, has dismissed inquiries, saying in January: “Humane treatment isn’t special treatment, and political prison tours don’t move the country forward.”
