A Florida mother, Joelle Service, 33, took her 6-year-old daughter to Wolf Branch Brewing in Mount Dora for what was supposed to be a simple birthday outing. The plan was straightforward: celebrate for a few hours, drive home, and call it a day. But according to investigators, Service kept drinking wine before getting behind the wheel.
The story she later had to tell the Apopka Police Department left her in an extraordinarily difficult position. Officers found Service passed out behind the wheel of her SUV on the shoulder of State Road 414. Her vehicle had damage to both sides, she allegedly had bloodshot, glassy eyes, slurred speech, and had vomited on herself. Fortunately, the SUV had come to a stop on the shoulder of the road, and no one else was injured.
The 6-year-old saved the day
As troubling as it was that Service allegedly drove under the influence with her 6-year-old daughter in the vehicle, investigators say the child may have prevented the situation from ending much worse.
According to Guessing Headlights, after her mother lost consciousness behind the wheel, the little girl remained remarkably calm. She reportedly stood outside the vehicle and waved at passing motorists, hoping someone would stop to help or call emergency services.
Eventually, a passerby did just that and contacted police. The child later told officers she had been frightened while her mother was driving because the SUV was swerving and striking objects before finally coming to a stop.
A local outlet obtained the arrest affidavit, which detailed how officers were alerted to the situation. It stated: “A passerby made contact with the juvenile, who stated she was 6 years old. Dispatch further advised that the juvenile’s mother remained inside the vehicle and had been observed vomiting. According to the witness, the female appeared unconscious and had vomit on herself.”
Investigators also reported that when officers questioned Service, she was unable to explain which damage to her SUV was new and which had been there previously. She also could not account for how the passenger-side door had been damaged.
Reckless driving is an unfortunate reality on roads everywhere. Sometimes it involves impairment, sometimes distraction, and sometimes other factors entirely. But stories like this are particularly unsettling because they serve as a reminder that dangerous driving doesn’t just put strangers at risk — it can also endanger the very people riding in the same vehicle. In this case, authorities say the person who remained calm enough to seek help was the youngest person involved.
DUIs ruin lives
Service is now expected to face charges of DUI with a child in the vehicle and child neglect without great bodily harm. The incident will also likely draw the attention of child welfare authorities as the legal process moves forward.
Depending on how she pleads, the strength of the evidence, and the judge’s sentencing decision, Service could face jail time or receive a sentence that includes probation, fines, and other court-ordered conditions. Much will depend on factors such as whether this is her first offense and the specific circumstances of the case. Regardless of the outcome, the incident serves as a stark reminder that driving under the influence can have life-altering consequences — even in cases where, fortunately, no one is physically injured.
