Dallas woman starts a hairbrush business, but quitting college for it got her kicked out of home

“You made that happen.”

Dallas resident and TikToker Mahogany, who posts under the handle michelleeeintexas across TikTok, Instagram and YouTube, just put up a post to celebrate a major milestone. The last year has been long and difficult, after she had to live in her car from June 2025. Now, she has finally moved into her own apartment in Texas, and her celebration has already racked up a staggering 17 million views.

Recommended Videos

The video starts by showing her previous life in her car, including the ways she managed her daily routine while on the road. There were clips of self care and running her successful hairbrush business. Then the post cut to showing us, her viewers her new house. As she entered the door, she is clearly overcome with emotion, running through the house and squealing with joy. The on-screen text for the post simply reads, “you never gave up.”

According to her posts, Mahogany has had to fight for her win. She had previously made waves when she shared a now deleted post detailing how she made the bold decision to drop out of college to pursue her own hairbrush business, and design goals. That particular video was intense, featuring a clip of a man throwing her belongings out of the house. It also showed her running her business, and living in a car, highlighting her circumstances.

Mahogany often filmed her content from inside her car. In one post, she tracked her journey of living in a car., in another, she showed how she kept moving through chores and tasks to survive the intense Texas heat. From all her posts, whether she was heading to interviews, attending events, or just running errands, her car was where she spent most of her time.

Outside of her hairbursh shop, her get ready with me segments helped her build a loyal community. That eventually led to an invite to Los Angeles for a creator event, which is a massive achievement for someone building a business from the ground up.

Throughout this period, she was transparent about her situation, often writing “interact with this video so I can get and apartment and move out my car.” Her community pulled through. As you go through her videos, you will often see comments that inform others how they can optimize their engagement, and help Mahogany hit the ‘For You Page.’

They also rallied to celebrate. One user wrote, “congrats queen!!” while another wished her future luck, saying, “I hope you can achieve even more…” A third TikToker mentioned, “I am so proud of u stranger!!!” One mentioned, “I recognize where you come from. Be proud of yourself THIS IS YOUR TIME.” However, there was one TikToker who wanted to confirm, “We ALL happy for her right?”

Then there were the brands to offered more. IKEA reached out saying, “I see you need some furniutre, i know a place. And well done!” Similarly, Lowe’s offered a suggestion of how to approach the house: “Time for some amazing DIYs. Congratulations! Send us a DM for a house warming gift.

Lipton iced tea offered tea, to fill out her refrigerator. ARM & Hammer offered Mahogany help with outfitting her laundry space. Makeup brand Anastasia Beverly Hills also offered, “So amazing! we’d love to send you some of our favs to make your grwm in your new apartment the most special! DM US.”

Her community support went beyond just social media comments. An attorney in the comments suggested that she add a sofa to her Amazon wishlist so that others could purchase it for her. In her latest video, Mahogany is seen dancing to show off the items that her community bought for her from that list, to help her settle down quickly.

Outside of a robust TikTok community, the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs, known as TDHCA, works to link individuals with organizations that provide funding and housing resources. One notable program is the HOME American Rescue Plan

The TDHCA was allocated approximately $132 million in HOME-ARP funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. This program helps various qualifying populations, including households experiencing homelessness, those at risk of homelessness, and individuals fleeing domestic violence, seek and create homes.

All the hours I spent teaching myself so many forms of art and helping people. I won’t feel bad for, but it’s hard to be a creative artist in this economy. I wanna be financially stable but I don’t want to give up my dreams and lose myself😕 thoughts? #livinginmycar #trending #dreams #texas #texasheat #fyp #foryou #carcamping #carlife #support

Homelessness is something that can occur to anyone, like the elderly couple who was told they won a lottery only to lose their life savings. Then again, being positive, helpful and selfless allowed a Michigan mother to shed the homeless label.
