Oregon woman demands patio seating during wildfire when the AQI is 500. Then storms back in furious that something got in her wine glass

Soggy flatbread became the least of her worries.

A woman in Oregon reportedly asked to be seated on a restaurant patio during wildfire season, even though the air quality index was said to be around 500 at the time, according to a server who described the incident in a viral TikTok video. The server, who goes by Kelly online, said the restaurant’s outdoor patio was closed that day because of the smoke. She said the woman grew upset when told she could not sit outside.

According to Kelly, the restaurant was a wine lounge with a garage door that opened during warmer months, which reportedly made outdoor seating popular with customers. She said Oregon experiences wildfire seasons each summer, and smoke from nearby fires tends to settle into valleys, which she said made conditions especially severe on the day in question.

Kelly said the incident took place during the COVID-19 pandemic, when she was still required to report to work despite low customer traffic. She said the restaurant had not closed for the day, even though air quality was reportedly hazardous and few people were out.

Server said she repeatedly declined the customer’s request to sit outside

Kelly said a woman entered the restaurant around 6 p.m. and asked to sit on the patio. She said she told the customer, “Unfortunately, our patio is closed today due to the weather, but I can happily seat you inside.” According to Kelly, the woman questioned the decision, asking why she could not sit outside since the weather looked pleasant.

Kelly said she explained the closure was related to staff safety rather than the customer’s own health risk. She said she repeated this explanation multiple times before the customer agreed to sit inside, choosing a table near the garage door. Restaurant staff often describe similar friction points with customers, and some servers have shared how tipped pay affects their daily earnings in similar viral posts.

The customer then asked to change her dine-in order to a to-go order and asked to purchase a bottle of wine to drink a glass while she waited, Kelly claimed. Kelly said she agreed to this request.

While the food was being prepared, Kelly said the customer packed her belongings, including her wine glasses and bottle, and asked to be seated at an outdoor table instead, requesting utensils be brought to her. Kelly said she told the woman she was welcome to sit outside with her wine but that staff would not be bringing her food or utensils to that table, since employees were not permitted outside during the smoke event.

Kelly said the customer’s flatbread order took longer than usual to prepare and sat under a heat lamp for an extended period, which she said can cause food to become soggy. She said she had already informed the customer the food would be ready in five to ten minutes and would need to be picked up inside.

According to Kelly, the customer returned inside roughly 20 minutes later holding a wine glass, saying that ash had reportedly fallen into her drink and possibly into the bottle as well. Other Oregon-based consumer complaints have also drawn attention online, including one involving a lawsuit tied to a store-bought drink

Kelly said she declined the customer’s request for a partial refund, telling the woman, “Unfortually, I can’t do anything. You paid for your bottle, and I told you you would not be receiving service outside.” Kelly said she also declined a follow-up request for a percentage refund.

Kelly said the customer then went back outside, poured out her wine glass on the sidewalk, and returned inside, claiming she had accidentally spilled her drink, asking for a free replacement glass. Kelly said she declined this request as well.

According to Kelly, when she handed over the to-go food, the customer opened the container at the host stand and said the flatbread appeared greasy. Kelly said she explained the food had been sitting for a while because the customer did not pick it up when it was originally ready, and suggested reheating it in an air fryer.

Kelly said the customer asked her to remake the flatbread, and she agreed, but said the customer would be charged for a second order since nothing was reportedly wrong with the first one. Kelly then claimed that the customer then asked for a complimentary glass of wine “for the inconvenience,” which Kelly said she also declined.

The video drew numerous reactions from viewers in the comments section. One commenter wrote, “Sometimes I miss serving, then I hear a story like this.” Another questioned the restaurant’s decision to stay open, writing, “I’m sorry 500?!?!? I wouldn’t even think of going outside past 150! Businesses shouldn’t even be open past 200 for everyone’s safety!”

Some commenters connected the incident to broader industry issues. One viewer wrote, “Yeah if the restaurant actually had to pay you a real wage they’d be closing early all the time…and there’s no chance the owner lets people come in 10 min before close and sit there for 2 hours.”

Other viewers expressed sympathy for Kelly directly. One commenter wrote, “You are stronger than I am. If I had ever been a server, I would probably have ended up fired from every single job.” Kelly said the interaction ended with her bagging the wine bottle for the customer, who left without further comment. The other woman did not address the video publicly.
