It’s been a dramatic and entertaining World Cup. We’ve seen underdog teams like Cape Verde and Egypt come close to knocking out world champions Argentina, highly ranked teams like Germany and Brazil go home early, and a political drama after Donald Trump admitted pressuring FIFA to overturn a decision penalizing the USMNT.
Now another drama may be brewing from an unlikely source. Popular VTuber Essie, a kawaii anime girl, has been following the World Cup closely, but it seems that this adorable cartoon character may be the bearer of an inescapable curse.
Each team she supports in the knockout stage of the competition has been quickly knocked out of the competition. She has supported Brazil, Mexico, Portugal, the United States, Egypt, and Colombia, each of which was then booted out of the World Cup soon afterwards.
The “curse” even seems to switch mid-match. During the Argentina v Egypt game, Essie was supporting Lionel Messi’s side. They promptly went two goals down. Essie declared, “my pure heart will reverse the curse,” and switched to supporting Egypt. Egypt then conceded three goals and were eliminated.
“I do this for the love of the game!”
Now, in a development that will have French supporters choking on their baguettes and screaming “merde!”, Essie has confirmed that she will be supporting France in their match against Morocco today, but is confident that Kylian Mbappe will beat the curse:
France fans aren’t convinced and have taken to the comments begging her to support Morocco. @don_frant said, “please please please i’m actually begging you delete your post i want france to win please please please im begging you so bad”, @sae_98 said, “No leave us alone don’t support Marocco or France keep your love for Argentina”, and @subsubsub said they’re now “BETTING MY HOUSES MORTGAGE ON MOROCCO”.
Despite this apparent curse, the betting markets say France remains the favorite to win not just against Morocco, but to take home the World Cup. However, Morocco has vastly exceeded expectations (as per The Guardian) and could clinch a dramatic victory against the odds today.
If that happens, all eyes will now be on Essie to see which team will be “blessed” with her support next. If France is eliminated, the comments make it clear that many French people will pin this directly on Essie rather than anyone on the pitch.
In other World Cup news, Mbappe is in a bizarre battle of words with a Paraguayan senator who posted a “racist rant” about him, and Belgium continues to gloat after demolishing the USMNT earlier in the week.
