A mother has sparked intense backlash after deciding that a 17-year-old student’s friendly interactions with her 10-year-old son were signs of grooming. She spoke of the situation in a series of Reddit posts, which were uploaded to the subreddit BestofRedditorUpdates.
Upon reading her side of the events at a performing arts school, many observers said they were shocked by her aggressive response to what appeared to be a supportive relationship between castmates.
The mother shared that her son was in a drama group with an older teen who has a significant TikTok following. According to the mother, her son looked up to the older student, and the two would occasionally exchange messages about their shared interest in acting and their upcoming production of Mary Poppins. The mother admitted that she initially thought the interaction was sweet until she discovered her son had a crush on the older girl.
After reviewing their messages, she felt uncomfortable and decided to confront the teenager and the school director. She stated that she presented screenshots of their conversations, which allegedly consisted of the two discussing their lines, TikTok trends, and acting tips. Apparently, the director explained that the teen was simply being kind and supportive. However, the mother insisted that the behavior was predatory.
The mother held her ground
According to the post, the teenager was brought to tears during the meeting. The redditor also noted that her accusations were met with widespread disapproval from other parents and the online community.
Reddit seemingly agreed, and the reaction was overwhelmingly negative. One commenter captured the general sentiment, stating, “Yeah, this is stage parenting gone wild. As this story of HER behavior travels, his opportunities will dry up.” Another user added, “That parent is going to get her 10 year old blacklisted from the industry so no one has to deal with her insanity. I feel badly for both children. The 17 year old girl did nothing wrong.”
The mother’s insistence on labeling the interaction as grooming runs counter to the Broward County division of Big Brothers Big Sisters of America’s opinion of mentorship. They say that older mentors provide young people with positive role models and supportive relationships that contribute to their personal and social development.
They pointed to research, including a 2002 study by DuBois et al. published in the Journal of Adolescent Health, that indicates that mentored youth often see improvements in self-esteem, academic performance, and social competencies. By acting as a mentor, the older student could have provided the 10-year-old with a sense of stability and confidence, helping him navigate his first main role in a production.
The situation did not end with the initial confrontation. The mother provided an update, noting that the teen had blocked her son on social media as requested. However, her son did not seem to know and initially thought the accounts were deleted. When he learned he was blocked, he reportedly reached out to the teen on Instagram. Since she did not know the account, she apparently used profanity.
The mother then explained what was happening and blocked him again. Despite that, the mother expressed frustration. “I’m honestly a bit mad she swore at him. I get she didn’t know for sure it was him, but she knew she had blocked him, so she should’ve been more careful. Also she continued talking to him after finding out it was him. She should’ve instantly blocked him.”
Throughout the conversation, the mother doubled down on her actions, claiming she was merely ensuring her son’s safety. However, commenters pointed out that her behavior seems more focused on controlling the teen than actually parenting her own child. Another Reddit user who received flak from the community was the story of an entitled mother who shoved her son in a classroom he didn’t belong in and ran.
One particularly pointed comment noted, “You’re projecting your own dysfunctional thoughts regarding your son onto a girl who has done everything she possibly could in this situation correctly to establish boundaries while also being kindhearted to a child she has to share community space with.”
On the flip side of the parenting coin, a K9 handler was praised for standing up for her child after learning that her bully was bullying her son.
