Family rents San Diego Airbnb. Then they notice pictures of themselves on the wall, taken 10 years earlier: ‘We can’t make this up’

Who else got goosebumps?

A family vacation in San Diego turned into an unexpected mystery after two sisters spotted a framed photo hanging inside their Airbnb that appeared to show their family from a beach trip a decade earlier. Aubrey Birrell (@aubsbirrell), shared the discovery in a viral TikTok video captioned, “We can’t make this up….. this is the craziest thing.”

“Okay, guys, the weirdest thing happened,” Birrell begins in the video. “We get to our Airbnb in San Diego. It’s unsettling. Unsettling.” According to Birrell, the family had no prior connection to the vacation rental and began casually looking around after arriving. “We’re like, random Airbnb looking through it,” she said.

The surprise came when her father noticed one of the framed photographs displayed on the wall. “We’re looking at this picture, and my dad is like, ‘This looks like me.’ And I’m like, ‘Oh, Dad. ‘” Then she looked closely and agreed.

The sisters recognized more family members and confirmed details

She added that the family immediately recognized details that confirmed the picture belonged to them. “That’s my sister Libby when she was 10 years ago. And that’s Brady, my brother, 10 years ago. We have those swimsuits. We are literally in this picture,” Birrell said. “It’s the craziest thing. So we are on our Airbnb wall.”

The family could not explain how the image ended up decorating a vacation rental they had never visited before. Birrell did not identify the Airbnb host.

The unusual discovery prompted hundreds of viewers to share similar stories in the comments, describing unexpected moments when they or family members appeared in old photographs in places they had never expected. One commenter recalled that their uncle once received a postcard from Michigan’s Mackinac Island featuring their late grandfather.

According to the commenter, their grandfather happened to be visible in the background eating an ice cream cone. That’s having no connection to the postcard itself.

Another viewer described visiting a Greek restaurant with their father, only for him to recognize a framed marina photograph hanging above their table. The commenter said their father eventually realized the image showed a boat he had worked on more than 20 years earlier and even captured him walking down the dock taking out the trash.

According to the commenter, the family became regular customers. When the restaurant closed during the COVID-19 pandemic, the owners gave the picture to her father as a keepsake, the commenter said.

At the time of writing, Birell hasn’t shared any further updates or revealed if they have solved the mystery of the images on the wall of an Airbnb of all places.
