Texas woman does a dance workout at her home. Then one mistake floods her two neighbors’ apartments: ‘Completely stunned’

She had just installed the pole in her home.

A Houston woman’s at-home workout took an unexpected turn when a pole dance practice session ended with water pouring through multiple apartments after a fire sprinkler activated. Asha Gilbert said she was filming herself while following a pole dance workout tutorial in her west Houston apartment on July 6, 2026, when the exercise pole suddenly came loose from the ceiling.

According to Houston ABC affiliate KTRK, the pole struck an overhead fire sprinkler, sending water rushing into her apartment and eventually into two neighboring units below. The incident, which Gilbert recorded on her phone, quickly spread across social media after she shared the footage online.

Gilbert told KTRK she had installed the pole only three days earlier after receiving it from a colleague. Gilbert and a friend installed the pole by securing it with tension between the floor and ceiling rather than mounting it to a ceiling joist. She said they worried the pole could hit a wall if it fell but never considered that it might strike the building’s sprinkler system.

An exercise session became a soaking wet situation

After the pole became dislodged, the sprinkler activated immediately after impact, sending water throughout the apartment. Gilbert described her reaction during an interview with KTRK. “Immediately, I’m in shock because I’m like, ‘Oh my gosh, this cannot be happening to me,'” she said.

Gilbert also told Storyful that her first concern involved getting her dog to safety. “I went into shock and was completely stunned,” Gilbert said. “My main concern was for my dog.” Firefighters arrived after she and her dog made it outside safely, according to Storyful.

Asha Gilbert was practicing pole dancing in her Houston apartment when the pole slipped from her ceiling and hit a sprinkler, with disastrous results. Gilbert had her phone set up to record the session, so captured the crazy scene on camera. “I went into shock and was completely stunned,” Gilbert said. “My main concern was for my dog.” Gilbert and her dog made it out of the flooded apartment in time for firetrucks to arrive.

The damage extended beyond Gilbert’s apartment. Water reportedly flowed into two apartments below. Gilbert said much of her furniture was ruined, forcing her to relocate to another apartment within the complex.

She said one downstairs neighbor responded with understanding after she explained what happened. “I explained everything, and she was very, very cool and understanding, and I appreciated that,” Gilbert told KTRK.

Gilbert said she also wanted to use the moment to highlight pole dancing as a legitimate form of exercise. She told KTRK that she hopes people recognize the athletic demands of the activity.

“You have to be very strong, a strong upper body, strong core to be able to do it, and I just wish people understood that it doesn’t just have to be sexualized,” Gilbert said. “It can be looked at as a workout and a great workout at that.”

As for future workouts at home, Gilbert told KTRK she has changed her plans. “They are done. For now,” she said. She didn’t say whether she’ll return to the gym.
