New York man’s American Airlines flight announced it is running out of fuel. Then the crew timed out, and passengers were allegedly left stranded

Do you refuel before a trip?

A New York-based Tyler Jackowski recently found himself in a travel nightmare that has gone viral on TikTok, racking up over 12.8 million views in just two days. Posting under the handle fishin4clout, Jackowski shared his experience after his American Airlines flight from Dallas to New York allegedly stalled at a completely different airport and left the passengers stranded for hours.

Jackowski described his version of the situation in his video, saying, “Today I had a flight. That flight was from Dallas to New York. We get on the plane, we take off, we’re flying. We’re 30 minutes out from landing, and then they gave us an announcement that they are running out of fuel, and because of that, they’re gonna have to land in Philadelphia.”

Jackowski continued, “So we land in Philadelphia, and they said, okay, we’re gonna have to go to one of the little holding spots to get fuel. So we land, we go over to the little holding space, and we’re waiting for fuel. It took 45 minutes for the fuel to get started. No announcements whatsoever.” After refueling was completed, Jackowski claimed they got a warning that things might get worse.

Airline crews follow strict regulations about Timing Out

According to Simple Flying, global aviation regulatory authorities limit airline crew members’ work hours to ensure safety. Unforeseen delays often throw these carefully planned schedules off. When a crew reaches their limit, they must walk off duty to remain compliant.

Jackowski claimed they hit that moment. “As we start pushing back, they make an announcement that there’s a chance that the pilots and the crew might time out and their day might have to end, which would keep us from being able to fly. But they said that as long as they take off within the next hour, we’ll be good.”

He stated that the plane just sat on the tarmac, likely waiting for clearance. “Then not an hour later, 30 minutes later, they come on the intercom, and they say, hey, we’re timed out. We gotta go back to the gate.” Interestingly, in a different case, an American Airlines passenger was put onto a bus rather than a flight and was driven to her destination.

Once back at the gate, they remained on the flight. Jackowski alleged that they were told a new pilot was on the way from Chicago. He noted that since it would take time, “They come on the intercom again, and they’re like, hey, so if anybody wants to get off the plane, that’s fine. But your bags are gonna fly with this flight, meaning you will not get your bags for a couple of days, maybe a little over a week.”

Jackowski added, “A lot of the people didn’t check in bags; I did. So all the people who just have carry-ons get up, and they start getting ready to get off the plane, cause they just told us that that’s allowed.” He claimed that the staff told everyone that they had to record names if people were leaving. Now, Tyler actually made this video from the boarding area of the airport. This is when his microphone catches a gate announcement.

“Please do not leave the boarding area. The new flight attendants have been assigned. We just don’t know where they are, so they should be there shortly.” Jackowski wryly asked his viewers, “Did you hear that? We haven’t even gone to this part of the story yet. So then after 30 minutes of them writing down random people’s names, they get back on the intercom, they’re like, actually, we’re deboarding everybody.” Which is how he was waiting at the gate.

The comments section quickly filled with reactions from other travelers. One user noted, “American Airlines…Why on EARTH are you starting a trip from Dallas to NY without appropriate fuel levels. Someone is getting fired.”

Another commenter shared a similar frustration: “I spent 13 hours trying to get home on American on 7/17. 4 delays, 3 missed connections, 2 re-books. I was supposed to be home at 6:15, walked through the gate door at my destination at midnight. Ridiculous. American needs to get it together.” In a recent case, a newlywed couple reached the airport only to find that the husband had been involuntarily bumped.

At the end of the video, Jackowski asked American Airlines for an explanation. A day later, someone from the flight called him. He recorded the call in a follow-up video and used that conversation to also advocate for other passengers. However, that customer service call did not come with an explanation, so we don’t have American Airlines’ version of events.
