An incident at a Walmart checkout went viral after a woman’s EBT/SNAP card was declined. The woman, dressed in casual clothes, starts getting irate as her card is declined multiple times before she eventually walks away from the store. But some people online thought she was taking advantage of the program and did not actually need government assistance.
The video was posted by the aggregator page @HistorianUSA1, and she does not just try using the card once. She attempts the transaction multiple times until it ultimately fails. A Walmart employee then tells her, “Go outside and talk to Jesus.” She walks back to her car and makes a call to someone she does not identify, saying that “they” made her look broke.

She swipes.
“It didn’t go through.”
Swipes again.
“I know this card is gonna go through.”
Cashier: “It’s still declined.”
Her: “I know you’re fckn lying!”
Demands a manager. Storms out.
Then outside on the phone:

Eventually, it becomes clear that she is speaking with officials at the office that administers her EBT benefits, and she demands to speak to a manager. The call is abruptly disconnected from the other end of the line, and her daughter tells her that “they” do not pay for groceries anymore.
There was a lot of doubt
The woman and her daughter then have a conversation in which she asks whether her EBT no longer has funds because of Donald Trump. The video ends with her saying, “You don’t give someone something and then take it back.”
At first, some users thought the video was staged. But that does not seem likely because there was nothing being promoted—neither a comedy page nor a product. The original poster also expressed doubt, writing that Walmart would not let someone tie up several employees for five minutes just to stage a video.

According to The Daily Dot, some people questioned whether she even needed the assistance and were more focused on her conduct. One person asked why she was parked in a handicapped parking space. Another wrote, “Why is she on welfare while wearing an $800 Apple Watch? Looks like fraud.” Another X user was stunned that she used the phrase “Indian giver.”
The Trump administration did change some of the eligibility requirements for SNAP, which resulted in many people losing access to the program. After the Big Beautiful Bill was signed into law, the age limit for Able-Bodied Adults Without Dependents who rely on SNAP benefits increased from 55 to 64.
The post did not explain whether there were any actual issues with the woman’s card or whether there was any fraud, as she appeared to believe. The video simply drops viewers into the middle of someone having a very bad day in a country where public policy has changed significantly.
The reactions were very one sided
And if comments such as, “But they have cash for those tattoos, car, phone service, etc., etc. When we hard-working people want to buy a house, the finance company says sell your car, pay off debt, etc. to afford a house,” are anything to go by, it may not just be government policies that are changing—but public sentiment as well.
But they have cash for those tattoos, car, phone service, etc., etc., when we hard working ppl want to buy a house the finance company says sell your car, pay off debt, etc. to afford a house 🏡 why is not the same for the free loaders? They don’t need $4000 a month to EAT!!

Videos like this are posted on social media every week. Most of the time, they come with very little context and end up serving as a thermometer for where public sentiment currently stands based on the reactions they generate.
