A barista has said an ordinary complaint about lukewarm coffee turned into a conversation she never expected to have.
In a TikTok video, user @jorlala, who says she was the manager on duty, recalls being approached by a woman who wanted to discuss an experience she’d had earlier that day at another location. She says customers occasionally stop by to complain about other stores, so she initially assumed the conversation would center on customer service or drink quality.
Instead, she says it became one of the strangest customer complaints she’s ever handled. “I had the most absurd, insane f–king complaint from a customer,” she says at the start of the video. “And if there’s any story time that you guys want to sit down and watch of mine, this is gonna be the one.”
A routine coffee complaint takes an unexpected turn
The manager says the customer complained that coffee from another branch was consistently served cold or only lukewarm. She allegedly told the manager that she had asked employees to brew a fresh pot after receiving coffee that wasn’t hot enough.
She says the explanation made sense because the store follows a freshness policy. She recalled the customer saying employees had declined her request because there were still 45 minutes remaining on the timer. “I will say we did change some things, and it is standard to keep coffee for an hour, not 30 minutes. So that barista wasn’t lying to you,” she recalled telling the customer.
According to the manager, the customer insisted the problem had nothing to do with the company’s brewing policy. Instead, she claimed there was another reason. “And she said, ‘I’m white.'”
She says she paused because she thought she had misheard. The customer then argued she wasn’t being taken seriously because of what she described as the rise of “Karen culture.”
“It’s because of Karen culture. The Karen culture has invaded the coffee industry, and you cannot complain to anyone because they just assume you’re a Karen, especially when you’re white. It is so hard to be white and to complain nowadays.”
She also claims the customer pointed out that the employee who had served her at the other location was Mexican before continuing her complaint.
Rather than challenge that explanation, she says she offered what seemed like the simplest solution. “I’m really sorry that you had cold coffee, ma’am. Um, I could definitely just. I could just get you a new cup of coffee.”
The customer, however, is said to have turned down the offer, saying she no longer wanted coffee. She instead asked for the company’s corporate phone number because she believed employees would “cover for each other.”
For front-line workers, disagreements over drink orders don’t always end with the drink itself. Along with this incident, there have been others where a McDonald’s employee refused to continue serving a customer over repeated complaints about a customized beverage.
The conversation didn’t end there. She says that after declining the replacement drink, the customer asked what the store could do to make up for the experience. “I’m not one to do this, but what are you gonna do for me?”
She says she then reminded the customer that a fresh cup of coffee had already been offered. According to her account, the woman then asked whether she could receive a refund or a complimentary drink for another day.
Many viewers who watched the story focused less on the customer’s claims and more on the sequence of events itself. One commenter questioned the logic behind the complaint, writing, “so she was happy when the policy was 30 mins… but not happy the coffee was brewed 15 mins ago? wild.”
Others were skeptical of the request for compensation after the replacement drink had been declined. “anybody who asks ‘what are you going to do for me’ with ease has absolutely done that before!” one user commented.
Stories about tense interactions between customers and employees continue to resonate online, particularly when a straightforward service issue grows into a wider disagreement.
Some viewers also found humor in the way the creator told the story. One of the most-liked comments joked, “the birds chirping in the background were paid actors. bcause the loud chirps in that moment of silence was LOUD.” Another viewer took aim at the customer’s approach, writing, “‘I don’t normally do this..’ translates to ‘I literally do this ALL the time.'”
Looking back, the creator says the encounter still stands out among the many customer interactions she’s handled in retail. “Y’all. I. Like, I. I’m still in shock about this complaint to this very day. Like, I just. I can’t even believe this really happened.”
