A routine trip to New York unraveled after one announcement aboard an American Airlines flight gave way to another, leaving passengers unsure when, or even how, they would reach their destination.
TikTok creator Tyler Jackowski posted a video describing what he says was a drawn-out ordeal aboard an American Airlines flight from Dallas to New York. According to Jackowski, an unscheduled stop in Philadelphia led to changing instructions, crew issues and hours of uncertainty that extended well beyond the diversion itself.
Jackowski opens by addressing the airline directly. “This video is for American Airlines and American Airlines only. I got a bone to pick with you right now.”
A fuel issue led to a much longer delay
He says the flight was about 30 minutes from landing in New York when passengers were told “they are running out of fuel” and would instead divert to Philadelphia. After touching down, he claims the aircraft waited about 45 minutes before refueling began.
Once fuel was onboard, passengers were told there was “a chance that the pilots and the crew might time out,” although they were assured that “as long as they take off within the next hour, we’ll be good.”
It wasn’t long before another update followed. After the aircraft pushed back and waited on the tarmac, they were told, “We’re timed out. We gotta go back to the gate.” He says travelers were then told a replacement pilot was flying in from Chicago, but those hoping to leave and take a train were initially informed, “No, you cannot get off the plane.”
The instructions changed again. Passengers were told they could leave if they wished, but those with checked baggage would have to let their luggage continue to New York. Jackowski says airline staff then spent about 30 minutes recording the names of everyone choosing to leave before announcing that “actually, we’re deboarding everybody.”
Back at the gate, the uncertainty continued. Passengers with checked bags were told they needed to remain nearby while the airline searched for another crew. As a final update played over the loudspeaker, staff reportedly announced, “The new flight attendants have been assigned. We just don’t know where they are,” prompting Jackowski to plead, ” So American Airlines, get in the comments, figure it out. Help me out,” before concluding, “I’m gonna lose my mind.”
Jackowski’s experience follows another American Airlines incident in which passengers said they were left stranded inside an airport terminal for hours after an emergency diversion and crew timeout disrupted their journey.
Commercial flights routinely carry reserve fuel, and diversions can happen for reasons including weather, air traffic control, or crew scheduling. Flight crews are also subject to Federal Aviation Administration duty-time limits, while other operational decisions have disrupted passengers, including another American Airlines flight in which dozens of travelers were reportedly asked to leave because of weight restrictions.
While those safeguards are standard, Jackowski’s account focuses on the repeated changes in plans that, he says, left passengers unsure whether they would be flying or making their own arrangements.
Many viewers focused on the airline’s handling of the situation. One viewer questioned the reported fuel issue, writing, “American Airlines…Why on EARTH are you starting a trip from Dallas to NY without appropriate fuel levels. Someone is getting fired.” Another took issue with the overall experience, commenting, “They are way too comfortable holding yall hostage.”
Others were impressed by how calmly Jackowski recounted the experience. “This is the most respectful breakdown I’ve ever witnessed and I’m here for it,” one person wrote, while another claimed, “American Airlines turned off their comments.”
American Airlines has not publicly commented on the specific claims made in Jackowski’s video at the time of writing. The account reflects his description of the events during the disrupted flight.
