Trump called Marjorie Taylor Greene a ‘traitor’ over the Iran war, and now she’s announced a new ‘movement’ with former allies: ‘America First’

Marjorie Taylor Greene has announced a new political “movement” alongside several former Trump allies who have broken with the president over the war in Iran. Greene posted a photo on X showing herself with media personality Tucker Carlson, Rep. Thomas Massie, and Joe Kent, the former director of the National Counterterrorism Center.

Conservative journalist Brian Glenn also appeared in the photo. Greene married Glenn in Las Vegas on Tuesday.

The Independent points out that President Donald Trump has previously attacked several people in the group, calling Greene a “traitor” over her opposition to the Iran war.

Greene says the group’s focus is ‘America First for all Americans’

In her post, Greene explained why the group had come together. “We said no more foreign wars and we meant it and supported Donald Trump because he made that promise,” she wrote. “But he’s betrayed us all. Our commitment is America First for all Americans, right, left, and center,” she continued.

She added, “The movement has begun.” Greene resigned from Congress in January. Before this announcement, she had already spoken about possibly forming a new political party after growing frustrated with the Republican Party, at a time when reports were already surfacing about growing cracks in Trump’s MAGA base. 

On June 30, she told Piers Morgan, “I think there’s a group of us that if we decide to align, we could launch a true America-focused party that doesn’t fall into the traps of Democrats or Republicans, but could align some serious players from the right and the left.”

Carlson, a former Fox News host who now runs a podcast, expressed a similar view in July. He told The Columbia Journalism Review, “There’s going to be a third party, and I’m going to do everything I can to bring that about.”

Greene, Massie, Kent, and Carlson have all criticized Trump over the Iran war, which began in February. Kent, who served as Trump’s counterterrorism chief, resigned from his position in March because of his opposition to the conflict.

In a letter posted to X explaining his resignation, Kent wrote, “I cannot in good conscience support the ongoing war in Iran. Iran posed no imminent threat to our nation, and it is clear that we started this war due to pressure from Israel and its powerful American lobby.”

Beyond the war in Iran, Greene and Massie also split from Trump over the handling of the Jeffrey Epstein files. Both voted in favor of forcing the Department of Justice to release all of its records on Epstein, a dispute that had earlier led Greene to describe her falling out with Trump over the Epstein files. 

Greene had already broken with Trump over this issue before the Iran war began. After Trump criticized her publicly, she said she would resign from Congress rather than face a difficult primary battle. Massie also broke with Trump over the Epstein files and lost his primary race in May to Ed Gallrein, a retired Navy SEAL backed by Trump. Massie’s current term in Congress ends in January.
