A routine trip to Goodwill took an unexpected turn after one shopper said a disagreement over a coat’s price ended with a cashier accusing her of switching a price tag.
TikTok creator @silverswan294 says the dispute began when her sister brought a peacoat to the checkout. She said the coat was missing its tie belt and carried a $4 price tag, but the cashier said all coats at that location were priced at $6. For her, the issue became less about the money than feeling treated as though she had done something dishonest.
“I wanna start off by saying I like this Goodwill, and I’m not trying to hate on this Goodwill location. I’m not trying to hate on the people that work there,” she says at the beginning of the video.
Why she says the dispute wasn’t about $2
She pointed out that the coat was clearly marked at $4, but the cashier insisted it should ring up for $6. She said she tried to raise the issue politely, asking whether stores are generally expected to honor the marked price if an employee made a pricing mistake.
According to the woman, the employee responded that the tag had “clearly been switched” and pointed to a small tear in it as evidence. Rather than continue arguing over $2, she and her sister paid the higher price and left.
Looking at the tag again after leaving the store, she noticed someone had written “coat” on it. She said the detail led her to believe the item may have been intentionally discounted because it was missing its belt. “They must have discounted it $4 because it was missing the tie for the coat. That makes 100% sense,” she says.
The video itself does not establish why the coat was marked at $4 or whether the lower price reflected an employee markdown, a pricing error, or another explanation. Likewise, the creator’s belief that the discount was tied to the missing belt reflects her interpretation of the tag rather than something confirmed in the video. Although the circumstances differ, other shoppers have also questioned Goodwill’s checkout pricing after claiming an item rang up differently from its marked price.
Many commenters questioned the cashier’s assumption that the tag had been switched. One commenter wrote, “Logically speaking, the people that are switching tags are doing so on expensive items not a $6 coat.”
Others said they’d had similar experiences. “i had to pay 3 more dollars,” one commenter wrote, while another simply responded with “#badwill.”
The woman says paying the extra money was never what bothered her most. Instead, she felt the accusation overshadowed the purchase itself. She added that she had only lived in the area for about a week but had already spent more than $200 at the same Goodwill, making the interaction feel especially disappointing. “I did not feel like a valued customer, and that’s why I was upset,” she says.
The video does not show the checkout interaction, and Goodwill has not publicly commented on the creator’s claims. It reflects one shopper’s version of the incident.
