Shopper sees Froot Loops cut from $8.25 to $6.89 and calls it no deal. Aldi’s version cost her $1.19: ‘479% price increase’

She stepped out on Aldi and immediately regretted it

A quick stop in the cereal aisle became a reminder of just how different grocery prices can be from one store to the next.

A woman on TikTok who posts under the handle @queentayshops shared her surprise after finding a family-size box of Kellogg’s Froot Loops priced at $6.89 in another grocery store. After shopping almost exclusively at Aldi for the past two years, she said she’d lost track of how much national-brand groceries cost elsewhere.

Looking at the shelf, the creator questioned whether the sale price was much of a bargain after spotting a family-size box of Froot Loops marked down from $8.25 to $6.89. Reacting to the sale tag, she asked, “What are you talking about?” before adding sarcastically, “Like this is some amazing deal. What?”

Why one box of cereal caught her attention

She said the price was especially surprising because she had recently bought Aldi’s private-label version for $1.19. The creator joked that she needed “a slap on the wrist” for leaving Aldi, saying the off-brand cereal came in a “huge box,” had “no bad dyes,” “no bad ingredients,” and “taste[s] amazing.”

After comparing the two products, she said she “just did the math” and calculated a “479% price increase.” The comparison is between Aldi’s private-label cereal and a national-brand box rather than items of identical brand or size.

Like many discount grocers, Aldi relies heavily on store-brand products, which are generally priced below national brands. That price difference is one reason many shoppers have become more deliberate about how they judge value, paying closer attention to how grocery and bakery products are presented before deciding what they’re willing to buy.

The creator also argued that not everyone has the same opportunity to take advantage of those prices. She said she has “the privilege of driving 30 minutes” to her nearest Aldi, allowing her to pay a fraction of what she would elsewhere, or as she puts it, “479% less on cereal alone.” She ended the video by urging viewers who are “not in the food desert” to “be grateful,” adding that the disparity “makes my stomach hurt.”

Her comments also touched on a broader issue. Grocery prices have remained a common concern for many households in recent years, and where someone lives can play a significant role in what they pay for everyday essentials. Communities with fewer full-service grocery stores often have fewer affordable options, even when lower-priced retailers operate elsewhere in the region.

For many shoppers, those concerns have also made it easier to notice how much grocery bills have changed over time, as one Walmart customer recently discovered after comparing the cost of the same shopping list from two years apart.

The video struck a chord with many viewers, several of whom said they’d had similar experiences. One of the most-liked comments read, “Aldi has really made it hard to shop at a regular grocery store. The prices are insane.”

Another viewer said higher grocery bills had changed where they shop altogether. “Literally went to Kroger & Walmart spent $300.. only got like 1-2 weeks worth of food for a fam of 5 IM DONE. Aldi’s ONLY from now on,” the comment read.

Others focused less on one retailer and more on how everyday grocery shopping has changed. One viewer summed up the frustration by writing, “I hate going grocery shopping it’s so damn expensive now.”

The video isn’t a definitive comparison of grocery prices, but it does capture a feeling many viewers recognized. For shoppers who rarely compare prices across different retailers, one trip down the cereal aisle was enough to make them look at their grocery bills a little differently.
