Filling up your gas tank should be straightforward. But TikToker Tori Kasside recently stumbled into a payment mix-up at a Kroger Gas Station, with no clear understanding of how to resolve it.
In a tense post that’s since racked up over 1.1 million views, she highlights the interaction with a Cashier after she paid $50 in cash for gas, only to find that her money and rewards had apparently been given to another customer.
She’s clearly frustrated, arguing that she shouldn’t have to jump through hoops to recover her money after the cashier suggested she call 1- 800-Kroger to resolve the issue. Tori tells the cashier, “No, I should get my money back now I gave you cash.” When the cashier continues to push the 1- 800 number, Tori fires back, “If I gave you cash, I ain’t paying no 1- 800 Kroger.” She then expresses her belief that calling is “not gonna get my money back.”
A confusing transaction
The situation gets even more confusing because other customers at the station were also having issues. Potentially the one who accidentally used Tori’s rewards. They keep insisting, “Y’all owe me a dollar and ten cents. That’s all I know.” They or another person then tells Tori, “You should be able to get it right now. You should be able to get it to you right now. You pay cash as.” Multiple voices also chimed in to mention how much Tori was owed.
The comments section on TikTok was flooded with reactions from people who were just as baffled by the store’s response. One user wrote, “She’s trying to steal your money.” However, another provided a reason for why the cashier was being so careful. They wrote, “The cashier being hard cause she know that mistake comes out her pockets.” In a completely different instance, a New York gas station offered a 20% discount if customers danced for the cashier.
Others shared their own gas pump stories. One TikToker recounted, “One time I put 30$ on 3. They couldn’t argue cause I held up #3 with my fingers that the camera could CLEARLY see. They put it on the wrong pump and told me I’m out of luck. I was in high school and BROKE they told me the best they could do was come back tmr and they would try to help. They better be glad I was in highschool bc I would’ve cause a SCENE today.”
It’s wild to see how difficult a simple transaction can become. According to the Greater Texas Credit Union, there are many ways to stay safe at the pump, but those tips mostly focus on avoiding card skimmers and protecting your PIN. They suggest that when you are smart about how you pay, it can be safer and easier to use a card.
When using a card at the pump, the Greater Texas Credit Union notes that you should look for signs of tampering, such as loose card readers or broken seals. They also recommend choosing the pump closest to the store to ensure you are within the range of security cameras. However, cards can come with their own scares, as one TikToker shared when she saw triple digit holds on her card after stopping at Alabama gas stations.
Despite the advice from the Greater Texas Credit Union on how to handle credit and debit cards safely, the issue here wasn’t a skimmer. Rather, it was human error, with no easy solution.
One commenter summed up the frustration perfectly, saying, “I don’t know about their pumps. but at my work, if u pre paid 50 n cash and only pumped 20 and hung up pump. the rest will show up on the pump and all we do is click it and the register opens to give the cash back. that’s fishy af that she said she can’t give ur change to u! id b contacting the manager.”
Another viewer pointed out how different things are in other parts of the world. They noted, “In Australia, we fill fuel then walk inside and pay for what we pumped. its actually that easy.”
Tori’s caption for the video simply asks, “How would you handle this situation?” Given the chaos in the video, it is no surprise that people are divided on whether this was a simple mistake or something more sinister.
