New York gas station offered customers a 20% discount, but only if they danced for the cashier: ‘Made us smile’

Customers showed off their moves.

A gas station in Halfmoon, New York, gave customers a chance to save money on gas by dancing for the cashier. The Sonoco & Halfmoon Car Wash on Route 146 offered 20% off gas and other in-store items on July 30 if customers agreed to show off their dance moves.

The discount apparently did not apply to alcohol or tobacco. A video of the event has since gone viral, drawing millions more views on their social media profiles. It’s not the only time a gas station has gone viral for reasons that have nothing to do with the pumps — one TikTok couple got spooked by a creepy abandoned-looking gas station with the lights off and dust-covered cars parked out front.

According to Times Union, Paulina Sirtori, who manages the gas station’s social media accounts, said she did not expect the video to get this much attention. “We weren’t expecting it to blow up,” she said.

Three regular customers took part in the video

The people dancing in the video are three customers who visit the gas station often, according to Sirtori. She said she asked them to take part in the video but did not expect them to commit to it as much as they did.

One of the customers, a man named Dan, stood out to Sirtori as her favorite. He was the second customer shown dancing in the video. “I wasn’t expecting them to dance their hearts out,” Sirtori said. “It just made us smile.” The video shows customers dancing at the gas station in exchange for the 20% discount on gas and other store items. The promotion reportedly ran for one day, on July 30.

Gas prices in New York have been rising in recent months. As of August 8, 2026, according to the American Automobile Association, the New York average price for gas was $4.1714 per gallon. The national average on the same day was $4.0224 per gallon.

AAA’s county-level data for New York shows gas prices varying across the state, with some counties averaging as high as $4.5570 per gallon and others as low as $4.0470 per gallon. The rising prices have also fueled less lighthearted stories, like a costly Minneapolis gas-theft scheme where thieves have been drilling into truck fuel tanks to siphon gas.
