Man asks a retail worker a backhanded question about wearing their hair up in pigtails, but gets defeated at his own game: ‘It’s for aerodynamics’

Honestly, that was a brilliant answer.

Handling everyday customer interactions while expressing alternative style through hair, makeup, or outfits often comes with an unwritten tax. More often than not, workers have to endure side eyes, passive-aggressive jokes, and even invasive questions from strangers.

TikTok creator and retail worker Van (@virtualvan) recently walked his audience through one such alleged encounter. However, he responded to the customer’s alleged attempt at a subtle insult with a deadpan response that completely flipped the script. Van’s viral storytime is now sitting at over 288,000 views.

“”I know you were trying to say something backhanded and weird. I know it was a little bit of an insult. I clocked it, and I responded, and I won,” they shared. Instead of getting defensive over the allegedly backhanded comment about their hair, Van used absurd humor to leave the shopper utterly speechless.

A customer singled out Van’s pigtail hair style on the job

The alleged interaction unfolded while Van was working a merchandising shift. They shared that they had kept their hair tied up in pigtails to stay comfortable while moving stock. But when they went to assist a customer shopping alongside his wife, Van noticed the man kept staring continuously throughout his visit.

Eventually, the customer spoke to Van under the guise of asking a quick question. Points-blank, the shopper pressed, “What are the pigtails for? Why the pigtails?” Rather than offering a serious explanation about personal taste or practical convenience, Van delivered a completely straight-faced response: “Oh, aerodynamics.”

Van used absurd logic to shut down an intrusive question about their hair

Confused by the unexpected answer, the customer pressed further, attempting to steer the conversation toward Van’s identity. He asked if the hair style was “an L-B-G…” thing.

Refusing to take the bait, Van doubled down on the absurd premise. He explained that the pigtails were “purely” for workplace efficiency to help them sort merchandise faster. “No, no, it’s for aerodynamics, purely. Like, this is purely so I’m more efficient at my job. It makes me much faster.”

Van then turned the joke directly back on the customer, gesturing to his bare scalp. “You should try it… You should try pigtails.” Faced with the unshakeable humor, the bald shopper had zero counter-comebacks left. So, he quietly chuckled before reportedly walking away to finish his shopping.

Why disarming micro-aggressions with humor works well in retail

Front-line retail workers are often expected to maintain customer service decorum even when patrons cross personal boundaries. If a customer hides subtle insults or intrusive identity questions behind casual curiosity, responding with anger can escalate a shift unnecessarily.

So, by matching the allegedly backhanded question with straight-faced sarcasm, Van effectively took away the customer’s leverage. Treating a passive-aggressive comment like a ridiculous non-issue deprives the speaker of the uncomfortable reaction they were fishing for. It establishes clear boundaries without compromising professional composure.

Van celebrated the victory over backhanded workplace comments

Reflecting on the encounter from their car, Van celebrated beating the customer at his own game. They noted that confidence and quick wit are the ultimate defense against unsolicited opinions.

“I didn’t just win the battle, I won the war,” Van joked in their final debrief. “And if he comes back in, I expect him to have little pigtails glued to his big bald head.”

At the end of the day, how you wear your hair, makeup, or outfit is nobody’s business. If a stranger insists on questioning your personal choices, giving them a ridiculous answer is the fastest way to send them on their way.

Have you ever used humor or absurd logic to shut down a backhanded comment in public?
