An Atlanta woman recently had her heart set on a new vanity from Home Depot, but what she got was way more than she ever expected. Avelyn (@its.avelyn) recently took to Instagram and TikTok, right after she figured out what had happened. The result was a post that already has over 900K views on both platforms. As she explained, her attempts at efficiency went sideways the moment she arrived at the store.
Avelyn alleged, “I ordered a vanity. I ordered it to the Home Depot because I said to myself, I don’t want to wait until next week to get my vanity. So I order it to Home Depot. It’s there early. I go pick it up, the lady comes out, she’s like, ‘How far is your car?’ I was like, ‘Oh, no, I’m in danger.’” Avelyn claimed that the worker then brought out three boxes big enough that she had one question: “What kind of vanity is this?” She even showed her viewers that the box was bigger than her.
Avelyn took it in stride, though. She told her viewers, “I didn’t really think the vanity was that big. I thought I had measured, but, you know, girl math, whatever.” Then came the challenge of transporting, and she did it like a champ. She said, “Mind you, they’re about 100 pounds each. I’m shimming. I’m using leverage. I literally am letting the box fall into the trunk, squatting down, picking it up, shoving it in the car.” They were so big that she allegedly had to make two trips.
Then she opened the first box
“I open one of the other two boxes. It has my name. On it says, ‘My name. One of three.’” Then Avelyn alleged, “I open it. That’s not my vanity. I don’t know what that is. It’s black. My vanity is white. I don’t know what that is.” After a moment of panic and a phone call to her friend, she checked the second box. It contained her entire vanity. In just that one box. Then again, at least she had more items and not a missing one.
This left her with two mysterious, heavy boxes that definitely didn’t belong to her, prompting her to plead, “You, Home Depot, you need to come. You need to send help. Send help, because I can’t pick these boxes up.” Avelyn’s post is her claim, so it shouldn’t be treated like verified fact. However, listening to her is hilarious. As were the comments that flooded her post.
The reactions ranged from “Home Depot ain’t coming. that’s all yours now enjoy” to more practical, if still cheeky advice like, “Post on fb marketplace lmao its a gift.” One Instagram user even suggested she might have hit the jackpot, saying, “Plz put the sku in online we gotta figure out if you hit a lick.” Funnily, this isn’t the only Home Depot vanity saga this year.
It is worth noting that federal laws regarding unordered merchandise are pretty clear. According to the FTC, if you receive something you never ordered, you generally don’t have to pay for it, and you aren’t legally required to return it. It is considered a free gift. However, Avelyn decided to take the high road. She later made an update, captioning it, “UPDATE: Although I would love a new pergola, @homedepot will be picking it up on Monday. Sharon, I promise it was not my fault girl.”
In the video, she cleared up the mystery of the extra items. “Y’all are nosier than me, because everybody’s asking, ‘What’s in this box?’ Tell me to open it, to look inside, to look up the sku, SKU. I don’t know. Anyway, it’s a pergola. It’s a pergola. And I think that those Black Ridge things are part of the pergola, and Home Depot’s coming to pick it up.”
She seemed relieved to have a plan in place, even if she felt a bit bad for the person who was originally supposed to receive the garden structure. Especially since one of the pieces got left behind under her vanity box. “So, Sharon, I’m sorry, girl. I hope you didn’t need that for this weekend, because it’s at my house, and Home Depot’s not coming to pick it up until Monday. So, Sharon, my bad, girl. I hope you get your pergola soon, though. Maybe they’ll get you another one.”
Some of her followers were sad to see her give up the extra loot, but many praised her honesty. One TikTok user commented, “Love that you called them and didn’t just keep it… there are still good people in this.”
At the end of her update, she happily showed off another update. She told everyone, “Also, if you’re wondering, I finished the vanity.”
