Twentieth Century Fox has released the first trailer Bridesmaids director Paul Feig’s The Heat, and while it does look familiar, it still promises to be plenty funny. After all, despite its formula you can’t ever really go wrong with an amusing buddy pic ~ assuming excellent execution, of course.

Starring Melissa McCarthy and Sandra Bullock, The Heat pairs a raucous police detective partnered with a self-respecting (at least for now) federal agent in hot pursuit of a Russian mobster, and between McCarthy’s variation on her scene-stealing, Oscar-nominated Bridesmaids performance and Bullock’s good-natured goofy-prone straight woman the chemistry seems a lock.

Of great interest will be Demián Bichir, best (or at least most recently) recognized for his dramatic work. Heartbreakingly sympathetic as an earnest undocumented father providing for his son in the must-see A Better Life, and heartbreaking for other reasons as a cartel attorney with ostensibly clean[er] hands in the searing Savages, it’ll be nice to experience him in a lighter vein (no matter what McCarthy throws at him ~ perhaps literally! ~ it’ll be easier to take then fair Elena). Let’s hope we get to see him with some new room to move.

Scripted by Parks and Recreation’s Katie Dippold, The Heat is currently slated for an April 2013 release. Check out the trailer and synopsis below.

Uptight and straight-laced, FBI Special Agent Sarah Ashburn (Sandra Bullock) is a methodical investigator with a reputation for excellence–and hyper-arrogance. Shannon Mullins (Melissa McCarthy), one of Boston P.D.’s “finest,” is foul-mouthed and has a very short fuse, and uses her gut instinct and street smarts to catch the most elusive criminals. Neither has ever had a partner, or a friend for that matter. When these two wildly incompatible law officers join forces to bring down a ruthless drug lord, they become the last thing anyone expected: buddies. From Paul Feig, the director of “Bridesmaids.
