We’ve learned from descriptions of The Wolverine and from the trailer footage that at some point in James Mangold’s film Logan is faced with the decision of whether to continue his everlasting ways or attempt to become mortal. Following that aspect of the story, a new Japanese poster has been released showing Hugh Jackman conflicted, seemingly between life and death.

The only text I’m able to decipher from this poster is the lone word written in English – samurai. Considering the synopsis has touted adamantium claws clashing with samurai steel, it’s very interesting that is the word they chose to put on a poster only showing Wolverine. Perhaps there is a further depth to his samurai experience than simply fighting against them in this film.

While this is a fairly good poster, and Jackman looks badass as usual, I think it may have been a bit more powerful if his claws were retracted and he was simply holding the sword. That would put a stronger emphasis on the mortality, and show that he’s attempting to change, if that’s what they’re trying to convey. That being said, the use of color is excellent and it looks like the blood splattering is from the sword cutting into his chest, which is incredibly awesome. If the goal is to become mortal, then on some level the character must be suicidal as well.

If you haven’t checked out the first two trailers yet, be sure to do that. While they aren’t mind-blowingly awesome, they are quality pieces of promotion for a film that has avoided bombarding audiences with footage in the year building up to the film’s release.

The Wolverine hits theaters in 2D and 3D July 26, 2013. Check out the new poster below and then let us know what you think of it in the comments section below. And bonus points to anyone who can translate that Japanese writing.
