Marc Webb Says Not To Worry About Too Many Villains In The Amazing Spider-Man 2

As exciting as all the casting news and rumors were during filming of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, red flags began to pop up for some as it seemed like villain after villain was introduced. That hesitation makes sense. We all saw what happened to Spider-Man 3 when it tried to juggle Venom, Sandman, and the New Goblin. So in an attempt to ease some of that hesitation, Marc Webb explained a bit of what he has planned for all these villains, saying that many are simply teases for future films.

Electro is the film’s main villain, we’ve known that from the start, and Webb reiterated that point in an interview with MTV yesterday. Check out what he had to say below.

“I’ll tell you that the main villain in this movie is Electro… These movies are sort of on-going, and there are hints and teases of what’s going to unfold in the future, but we were very focused on that simple conflict between Spider-Man and Electro. Electro is, to me, a really captivating and interesting villain because at this point, Spider-Man is really good at being Spider-Man. There is a level of virtuosity that is really fun to make and really fun to watch. Those abilities need to be challenged.

“If you think about it, [Electro] is god-like in his power. He can disembody and go into electrical sockets. If you touch him, it’s like the voltage of a thousand third rails. You get obliterated. For Spider-Man, whose webs happen to conduct electricity—I don’t know if you knew that—he poses a really difficult challenge. That was our focus for the villain… Rhino, of course, is in the movie, as a lot of people know, but that’s a little bit of a tease. It fits into the movie in a very elegant way.”

Teasing villains for future films is definitely a good thing. It’s much more satisfying when a villain was set up in a previous movie than when they’re just pulled out of thin air. With possible word of Electro, Rhino, the Green Goblin, the Vulture, and Black Cat, that’d be far too many villains to use in one film, at least without introducing them in previous ones. Down the line I’d love to see a Sinister Six showdown, but that has to be properly set up over the course of a few movies for it to work.

Another thing that could lighten the villain load is that Colm Feore may not be playing the Vulture, or even Adrian Toomes. When asked by another interviewer to comment on that rumor, Webb simply said, “No. He’s not playing that guy.” While that could just be a lie to avoid revealing what he has planned for the future of the Spidey universe, if true, that removes one of the villains that many are worried will clog the film.

The film’s panel is happening in Hall H at 5:30 pm today, so there’ll likely be some more interesting information coming our way then. Be sure to check back, as we’ll be bringing you all the Comic-Con and TASM2 news.
