The marketing campaign for ScreenGems’ horror remake Carrie, scheduled for release next month, has shifted into high gear with the release of numerous TV spots over the past few weeks, including a new one entitled ‘Rated R,’ which you can check out below:

ScreenGems is clearly pushing the scare factor of the Kimberley Peirce-directed film with the above clip, offering some tantalizing clues as to the massive level of carnage that Chloe Moretz’s unwitting telepath unleashes on her classmates during her high school prom. The reveal that Carrie will carry an R-rating is an intriguing and unexpected one, considering the film’s young cast and high-school setting would suggest a teenaged target audience. Hopefully, with the more restrictive rating in place, Carrie won’t pull any punches when it comes to its violent and disturbing tale of adolescent cruelty, and more adult viewers will check out the film.

Brian De Palma’s original film, which starred Sissy Spacek in the title role, also bore an R-rating and was very gruesome in its depiction of the chaos wrought by Carrie’s telekinesis. The remake’s rating is for “bloody violence, disturbing images, language and some sexual content,” which suggests that the buckets of blood hinted at in the teaser will flow quite freely, though the 16-year old Moretz most certainly won’t bare all for the role in the same ways that Spacek did.

For those unfamiliar with the original film or Stephen King’s novel, Carrie follows a sheltered, teenage girl (Moretz) who one day discovers that she possesses formidable telekinetic abilities. Pushed too far by her religious nut of a mother (Julianne Moore) and humiliated by her peers, Carrie unleashes a wave of death and mayhem across her small American town.

Will you be in line for the new Carrie this Halloween, or are you satisfied with staying home to watch De Palma’s original? Let us know in the comments section!

Carrie will terrorize viewers on October 18th.
