The latest trailer for Monolith Productions’ Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor emphasizes the importance of runes.

Acting as the only way to upgrade main character Talion’s weapons, discovered runes will apparently play a pivotal role in players’ successes. They come in different varieties, it’s said, and are predominantly found in slain enemies’ loot drops. However, the most powerful type – referred to using the adjective epic — will only become available to players whenever they dominate an orc captain’s psyche, and force him to issue a kill command against his superior.

In familiar fashion, the aforementioned runes will provide varied types of buffs to Talion’s weapons, which include a dagger, a bow and a long sword. An example of this is a particular upgrade that makes it so that the character’s foes are more susceptible to stealth takedowns. On the other hand, another is shown to offer a hefty damage boost.

Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor will sneak onto Windows PC, along with Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 on the seventh of October.
