The sudden death of the great James Gandolfini left a giant hole in Hollywood, and we’re all reminded with every film bearing his name that emerges that he was one of the finest actors of our times. His performance in romantic dramedy Enough Said was absolutely amazing, and of course his towering work on HBO’s The Sopranos may never be matched by any other actor. This fall, we’ll be treated to his last completed film, a crime drama titled The Drop.

Today, we have a new trailer and judging by the footage that’s on display here, Gandolfini seems likely to deliver a final performance that’s as powerful as his previous ones. It also looks like The Drop is going to be a surefire awards contender when it opens this Fall.

Gandolfini stars alongside Tom Hardy in the film, which was adapted from Mystic River author Dennis Lehane’s short story “Animal Rescue.” Hardy plays Bob, a former criminal who tends bar for his cousin Marv (Gandolfini). After rescuing a beaten dog and meeting the beautiful Nadia (Noomi Rapace), Bob appears to be entering a better time in his life. But when Marv’s bar is robbed at gunpoint and the dog owner (Matthias Schoenaerts) starts threatening him, Bob is pulled back into the criminal underworld of Brooklyn.

The Drop opens on September 12th. Check out the trailer, images and poster below and let us know what you think.

THE DROP is a new crime drama from Michaël R. Roskam, the Academy Award-nominated director of BULLHEAD. Based on a screenplay from Dennis Lehane (MYSTIC RIVER, GONE BABY GONE), THE DROP follows lonely bartender Bob Saginowski (Tom Hardy) through a covert scheme of funneling cash to local gangsters – “money drops” – in the underworld of Brooklyn bars. Under the heavy hand of his employer and cousin Marv (James Gandolfini), Bob finds himself at the center of a robbery gone awry and entwined in an investigation that digs deep into the neighborhood’s past where friends, families, and foes all work together to make a living – no matter the cost.
