Overkill Software, the creative minds behind bombastic co-op romp Payday, have revealed that an all-new The Walking Dead game is in development, which is to be overseen by Starbreeze Studios and Robert Kirkman himself.

Taking to Payday 2’s community blog over on Steam, Kirkman — the creator of The Walking Dead — spoke about his excitement for Overkill’s rendition of the lucrative IP.

“I’m a huge fan of what Overkill and Starbreeze have been able to do with Payday 2. It’s just an amazing co-operative game and I’m excited to be able to announce that Skybound is partnering with Overkill to make a Walking Dead game. I’m happy to say that it’s the co-op game that all of the Walking Dead fans have been waiting for.”

Though The Walking Dead has already had its fair share of the video game limelight in recent years — what with Telltale’s critically adorned episodic series and 2013’s not-so-critically adorned The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct — the fact that Overkill is aiming for a first-person survival horror experience justifies this new approach.

Besides, with Kirkman on board, the reputable studio has a considerable pool of talent to deliver a competent FPS experience; all mixed with the chaotic gameplay found in last year’s acclaimed shooter, Payday 2, of course. Speaking of which, Starbreeze CEO, Bo Andersson Klint spoke with confidence about Overkill’s vision, stating that:

“It will be gameplay focused, ferocious and bring chaos to the traditional industry model — from us developers straight to you. This time it’s big — don’t walk alone.”

While neither party alluded to a release date or even release window in the statement, we assume that Overkill’s take on The Walking Dead will release in 2016 — if the “Washington falls” line in the above trailer is anything to go by.
