In an emotional and unprecedented public statement, Rockstar Games broke its silence on X to address the latest wave of gameplay leaks surrounding Grand Theft Auto VI.
Describing the situation as “heartbreaking,” the studio apologized to fans for the way the open-world game had been exposed. At the same time, Rockstar confirmed that its highly anticipated showcase, GTA VI: An Extended Look on Netflix, remains on track.
It is a rare moment of openness from the notoriously tight-lipped developer, which is under enormous pressure to deliver a game that is expected to become one of the biggest entertainment releases ever.
GTA VI is “nearly there”
The latest drama began after an external breach by a group calling itself “CyberLeek” allegedly led to unauthorized snippets of GTA VI gameplay spreading across social media. The footage offered unpolished glimpses of the game’s mechanics, open-world exploration and vehicle physics.
For a studio known for controlling its marketing rollouts with almost surgical precision, the breach was a major blow. Rockstar acknowledged as much in its statement, writing:
“It would be an understatement to say that having videos of Grand Theft Auto VI gameplay leak in this way has been heartbreaking for our team, and this is obviously not how we intended for you to see the game after all this time.”
Rockstar also addressed the long wait that has tested fans’ patience. By the time GTA VI reaches players, it will have been 13 years since the release of Grand Theft Auto V.
After previous delays and structural changes pushed the game’s official release date to Nov. 19, the studio acknowledged that development has taken longer than expected. But there was some good news for fans: Rockstar said GTA VI is “nearly there.”
Industry insiders and former developers have suggested that the game could be 80% to 90% complete, with Rockstar reportedly conducting intensive daily playtests to identify bugs and optimize the game for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
Rather than allowing the leaks to derail its plans, Rockstar acknowledged the “spoilers” and said it would continue with its plans to reintroduce the game to audiences through its first streaming partnership.

GTA VI fans have already received a traditional trailer, but that footage largely consisted of cinematic cuts. The extended look, according to industry speculation, could run for up to an hour across multiple segments and give fans their first substantial look at the actual gameplay.
The wait is almost over
There is plenty for fans to look forward to, including the dual-protagonist system featuring Jason and Lucia, the sprawling map of Leonida — a fictionalized version of Florida — and the rumored next-generation police AI.
For all the secrecy surrounding GTA VI, Rockstar’s latest statement offered fans a glimpse at the people behind the game. The developers are clearly feeling the pressure, but the message was ultimately the same one Rockstar has been giving fans for years: the wait is almost over.
