Bethesda finally reveals TES6 title after an 8-year wait: ‘The Elder Scrolls 6 is actually called’

We finally have a name and a setting.

Eight years after it was originally announced via a short teaser, Bethesda Game Studios has finally revealed the official name for the next Elder Scrolls game. What’s more, fans who spent the summer counting asterisks in an Xbox executive’s social media post had guessed it correctly.

The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel is the title of Bethesda’s next mainline fantasy RPG. The studio’s director Todd Howard delivered the news himself, saving it for the last stretch of a video marking the developer’s 40th anniversary.

As reported by Kotaku, Howard wrapped up the retrospective by telling viewers, “You know, everybody’s always asking about Elder Scrolls VI. And we thought, hey, given the moment, what a perfect time to tell you what The Elder Scrolls VI is actually called.” The short teaser featured the abstract image of a scroll rising out of the dunes before the logo took over the screen. The series’ iconic theme also accompanied the announcement.

Fans had the name worked out months before Bethesda said it out loud

Amusingly, fans had already figured it out. When Xbox CEO Asha Sharma wrote about seeing the game played in real time in an August 11, 2026 post, she listed it as “The Elder Scrolls VI: ********,” with exactly eight asterisks. Sentinel fills that blank perfectly.

The Verge’s Tom Warren went further on October 29, 2026, citing sources who handed him the Sentinel name, a Hammerfell setting, and a plot about where the series’ namesake relics came from. Lore places Sentinel among Hammerfell’s chief cities. Hammerfell is a big expanse in western Tamriel, southwest of Skyrim.

There was also an epigraph at the end of the trailer that read: “The scroll offered only a shimmer, a veil thinly lifted to my eyes. A future lost. A victory undone. Sands of time scattered by fate.” What it implies is anyone’s guess, but fans will no doubt pick it apart word by word in the coming days and months.

The studio tempered expectations in a post on X, writing, “Development continues, and while it’ll be some time before we’re ready to share more, it feels great to finally reveal the name and location with you.” No launch window or platform list came attached.

Bethesda has described The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel as the project absorbing the bulk of its developers. Fallout 5 will be their next game after that, and we hope for more news as soon as possible.
