You know, it’s been a while since there’s been significant grumblings online about a toy-to-movie project. So let us end that silence and commence our sighing and eye-rolling. Mattel, the toy manufacturers that parents have kept in business for years, have combined forces with Chernin Entertainment for a new children’s film franchise. Based around their popular Ever After High line, the two outfits are hoping to develop the project into a series of features.

Let us rejoice.

The news lands courtesy of Deadline, whose opinion on the matter extended to “The brand is ripe for a feature film franchise.” What’s not made clear is how they reached that conclusion. Possibly because it’s already had a spin-off animated series? Or that it’s a guaranteed money maker? We’re opting for the latter, as they gave a brief outline of the toy line’s background:

“It’s based on the make-believe teenage sons and daughters of famous fairy tale parents such as Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, The Big Bad Wolf, Goldilocks, King Charming, Rapunzel, the Frog Prince, the Swan Princess, the Pied Piper, Robin Hood, Humpty Dumpty, Little Bo Beep, the Three Little Pigs, and a host of fairy godmothers. You name a fairy tale and they have a kid.”

No wonder it’s getting a film! Look at that list! There’s years and years of material waiting to be prepped and sold to eager youngsters. Apparently, the first flick will set up the entire premise:

“The storyline is about how these kids believe they must carry on their parent’s destinies because if they don’t, their parents’ stories will forever be lost and the characters will disappear forever. Yet, being teens, they struggle with wanting to break out of the mold and be their own people.”

Nothing new, there then. The usual “just be yourself, follow your heart, follow your dreams” garbage that’s older than the Shroud of Turin. There’s a little excitement here though because Chernin aren’t just a no-name production outfit – they are responsible for the brilliant invigoration of the Planet Of The Apes franchise. So there’s that, I guess.

Tell us, are you interested in an Ever After High movie? I think it’s obvious where I stand on this.
