After a solid year in development, Syfy has ordered an initial 13-episode run of Gale Anne Hurd’s sci-fi show, Hunters.

The series is based on Alien Hunter, the best-selling novel by Whitney Strieber, and “follows a Pennsylvania detective-turned-suspect Flynn Carroll who, after his wife mysteriously goes missing, is determined to prove his innocence and find her. His search leads to evidence that dangerous alien cells are living among us, and the U.S. government has a secret organization in place to thwart their terrorist efforts.”

The first season will be produced by Hurd’s own Valhalla Entertainment outfit, under a contract with Universal Cable Productions. She’s on board to executive produce alongside Heroes and V scribe, Natalie Chaidez, who’s also scripting the series.

Most noted for her phenomenal work bringing hordes of the undead to the masses in AMC’s The Walking Dead, Hurd’s resume features a strong commitment to genre. The Terminator and Alien franchises stand as two seminal works in the sci-fi field. So, pretty much anything she’s involved in, I’m very interested in. While I’ve not read the novel, it’s got the makings of another cult success for Syfy, who’ve made a concerted effort to draw in bigger audiences. This is the network that gave Battlestar Galactica its latest incarnation, so expect top quality extraterrestrial action.

There’s no word yet on casting, but that’ll likely kick into gear soon as Hunters is due to air sometime in 2016.
