Is Warner Brothers Pursuing A Female Director For Wonder Woman?

Of the ten DC properties that Warner Brothers officially announced last week, Wonder Woman is by far one of the most anticipated and is also arguably the one that carries the most risk. It currently stands as the first female superhero film in the modern superhero era (because the less we think about Elektra and Catwoman, the better), and stars Gal Gadot, an actress few are familiar with and who we haven't even seen play the Amazonian princess yet.

Of the ten DC properties that Warner Brothers officially announced last week, Wonder Woman is by far one of the most anticipated and is also arguably the one that carries the most risk. It currently stands as the first female superhero film in the modern superhero era (because the less we think about Elektra and Catwoman, the better), and stars Gal Gadot, an actress few are familiar with and who we haven’t even seen play the Amazonian princess yet.

Gadot’s time to prover herself will come in 2016, when the daughter of Zeus appears in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. But, with a solo film already greenlit, the big question right now is: who will Warner Brothers put in the director’s chair?

Many fans have already taken to social media to campaign for a female director to helm Wonder Woman, and according to THR, Warner Bros. is thinking the exact same thing. In a piece covering the dozens (!) of superhero movies slated for the next six years, the site claims that the studio is “opting for strong directors, tapping David Ayer (Fury) for Suicide Squad and seeking a female helmer” for Wonder Woman.

While it would immediately seem best that a female director bring the iconic female superhero to the big screen, it’s important to note that it’s also not impossible for a male director to give the character the incredible film she deserves. As long as they find someone with a strong vision and respect for the source material, we won’t have to worry.

In any case, with the search currently underway and all eyes pointed directly at the studio in anticipation for an answer, I suspect that it won’t take too much time for a director to be announced. Until that happens though, let us know who you’d like to see direct Wonder Woman in the comments section below.

Wonder Woman is slated for release on June 23rd, 2017.
