IMAX isn’t pulling any punches with the imminent release of Christopher Nolan’s sci-fi flick, Interstellar, as the company has revealed plans to bring the film to 770 IMAX-fitted theatres worldwide, making it the largest release in the format’s history.
During an investment call on Thursday morning, CEO of IMAX Entertainment, Greg Foster, believes that Interstellar — with its galactic voyage and strange, alien vistas — is the perfect poster child for the giant-screen exhibitor.
“It’s the largest release in the history of our company. We’re doing everything that we can possibly can. The movie represents most everything that IMAX tries to uphold in terms of our brand and the responsibility of the filmmaker and the quality of the film itself.”
Ever the advocate of film presentation — in fact, he’s also one of Hollywood’s few A-list directors to remain committed to the use of film over digital — Christopher Nolan shot just over an hour of Interstellar using the IMAX cameras, and we understand the film will be broadcast in 35mm, 70mm and of course, IMAX 70mm.
Taking place in the not-so-distant future, Interstellar will see our humble planet pushed to the brink, ravaged by climate change and a population that has long since spiralled out of control. Starring Matthew McConaughey, Jessica Chastain, Anne Hathaway and Casey Affleck, Nolan’s latest will see humanity’s last hope venture into the far reaches of space in search of a new planet to call home.
Early buzz for the film has been exceedingly good, with the likes of Edgar Wright, Rian Johnson and a host of other early attendees praising Interstellar’s scope and ambition. Unfortunately, us mortals will have to wait just a few days more before we see it ourselves.
Interstellar is making the last-minute preparations for its long-awaited launch, with Christopher Nolan’s latest expected to debut in IMAX theatres first on November 5th, before it’s general release two days later on November 7th.
