Back in October, we learned that The Dark Knight and Man of Steel writer/producer David S. Goyer was looking to develop a series focusing on Superman’s doomed homeworld of Krypton. Now, those plans aren’t only official, but more concrete, as Krypton has reportedly landed firmly at Syfy.

Goyer developed the story alongside Once Upon a Time and FlashForward executive producer Ian Goldberg, who will serve as co-executive producer on Krypton and handle scripting duties.

Unlike Gotham – Warner Brothers’ other superhero prequel series – Krypton won’t feature an adolescent Man of Steel or showcase early versions of the central hero’s rogues gallery. That’s not only because of the fact that Kal-El was an infant when Krypton is destroyed, but because Goyer and Goldberg are planning to go a bit farther back in Krypton’s history than Gotham did for Bruce Wayne’s backstory. The show will actually focus on Superman’s grandfather, long before Krypton’s tragic destruction.

Here’s the new synopsis for the series, courtesy of IGN:

Years before the Superman legend we know, the House of El was shamed and ostracized. This series follows The Man of Steel’s grandfather as he brings hope and equality to Krypton, turning a planet in disarray into one worthy of giving birth to the greatest Super Hero ever known.

At first glance, it seems a bit odd for Goyer to attempt to get audiences invested in an entire series about a planet that we know blows up eventually. However, considering we know very little about Krypton, and have only seen brief glimpses of the famous planet in live-action thus far, there’s definitely room here for compelling storytelling. Let’s just hope the series learns a bit from Gotham‘s early mistakes.
