Two intriguing casting announcements for the second season of HBO’s hit anthology series True Detective are making the rounds online today, with word that About Cherry breakout Ashley Hinshaw and “Jessie’s Girl” singer Rick Springfield have both landed roles.
Deadline reports that Hinshaw, who toplined recent found-footage horror The Pyramid and whose TV work includes True Blood and the upcoming Marvel’s Agent Carter, has been tapped for a multi-episode arc on the second season. She’ll play a troubled starlet.
Meanwhile, Springfield himself revealed his involvement in the second season of True Detective, tweeting out the following on late Wednesday:

It’s unclear who Springfield is playing, or how substantial the singer-turned-actor’s role is. Since “Jessie’s Girl,” Springfield has made more of a splash as an actor than a singer. He’s had spots on General Hospital, Drop Dead Diva and Californication, and the actor also recently shot Ricki and the Flash alongside Meryl Streep.
The eight-episode second season of True Detective, which is now rolling cameras in California, stars Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams and Taylor Kitsch as three troubled cops who, alongside a career criminal (Vince Vaughn), become enmeshed in a web of conspiracy and murder.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Farrell plays Ray Velcoro, “a compromised detective whose allegiances are torn between his masters in a corrupt police department and the mobster who owns him.” Vaughn, meanwhile, will play against type as Frank Seymon, a career criminal who goes legit but finds himself and his empire imperilled by the brutal murder of a business partner.
McAdams’ character is Ani Bezzerides, “a Ventura County Sheriff’s Office detective whose uncompromising ethics put her at odds with others and the system she serves.” Kitsch will portray Paul Woodrugh, “a war veteran and motorcycle officer for the California Highway Patrol who is running from a difficult past and the sudden glare of a scandal that never happened.” Finally, Kelly Reilly has a lead role as Seymon’s wife, a former D-List actress who is heavily involved in the business end of her husband’s empire.
Smaller roles have been snagged by Riley Smith, Abigail Spencer, Leven Ramblin, James Frain, Lolita Davidovich, Chris Kerson, C.S. Lee, Michael Irby, Adria Arjona, Matt Batalgia, Alain Uy, Jamison Jones, Stevin Knight, Jon Lindstrom, Emily Rios and Alex Fernandez.
Season 2 will be helmed by a variety of directors, including Fast & Furious helmer Justin Lin. Creator Nic Pizzolatto will once again be writing the entire season.
