According to a Latino Review’s Umberto Gonzalez, Universal Pictures is contemplating a full big-screen reboot of Miami Vice, the fan-favourite ’80s detective show with big action and even bigger hair.

The rumor comes almost eight years after the studio brought Sonny Crockett and Ricardo Tubbs to the silver screen with Michael Mann’s somewhat underwhelming rendition, which pulled in a meagre $200 million at the box office off the back of an expensive and indeed troubled production. In fact, Mann’s budget ballooned to $135 million when a powerful storm damaged the tropical set and subsequently delayed filming.

Details are currently scarce on the ground for this most recent reboot, and there’s no word on whether Mann — who executive produced the original show back in the 80s, where it ran for five seasons — will be involved in Universal’s latest take. Either way, given how much of a departure the gritty 2006 release was in comparison to the more light-hearted source material, it’s likely that the studio will harken back to the tone of the ’80s procedural.

Mann is currently putting the final touches to Blackhat — which stars Chris Hemsworth as an infamous hacker — and we’ll hopefully learn more of the director’s involvement (or lack thereof) in the coming weeks and months should Universal’s reboot begin to gain traction.

In the meantime, tell us, are you excited by the prospect of a Miami Vice reboot? And if so, who would you like to see star in lieu of Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx?
