When doing the press rounds for his upcoming cerebral sci-fi Ex Machina, screenwriter-cum-director Alex Garland revealed in an interview with IGN that he and Danny Boyle have had “serious discussions” about the possibility of 28 Months Later.

Should the creative pair push ahead with the project, the film would become the third entry into the zombie horror franchise, following up on 28 Days Later and its somewhat disappointing sequel, 28 Weeks Later. Garland served as screenwriter on 28 Days, and stated that he’ll likely executive produce before moving on to write the actual script.

“We’ve got an idea. Danny [Boyle] and [producer] Andrew [Macdonald] and I have been having quite serious conversations about it so it is a possibility. It’s complicated. There’s a whole bunch of reasons why it’s complicated, which are boring so I won’t go into, but there’s a possibility.”

Of course, given that the second film release back in 2007, demand for the threequel has understandably begun to wane. Plus, Garland hinted that the actual title for 28 Months Later is yet to be confirmed, though it’s expected to follow the path laid down by its predecessors.

“It’s more likely to be 28 Months than 28 Years” he revealed. “28 Years gives you one more place to go. 28 Decades is probably taking the piss.”

For the uninitiated, 28 Days Later was directed by Danny Boyle in 2002 and was met with rave reviews for its stark, gripping storyline an eerie portrayal of a desolate London. It starred Cillian Murphy in the lead role, who was replaced with Avengers star Jeremy Renner for the follow-up. At this time, it’s unclear whether either actor will return for Garland’s as-yet-unconfirmed threequel.
