Since it first leapt from the page back in 2011, HBO’s beloved Game of Thrones series has always tread a fine line between its source material and wanting to introduce characters and plot points that weren’t necessarily included in George R.R. Martin’s fantasy novels. But what happens when that line runs out?
With the Winds of Winter still incubating in development, fans knew that it was only a matter of time before the once-steadfast dichotomy intersected. However, in an interview with Vanity Fair, showrunner David Benioff confirmed that the series will reveal the ending to A Song of Ice and Fire.
“Luckily, we’ve been talking about this with George for a long time, ever since we saw this could happen, and we know where things are heading. And so we’ll eventually, basically, meet up at pretty much the same place where George is going; there might be a few deviations along the route, but we’re heading towards the same destination. I kind of wish that there were some things we didn’t have to spoil, but we’re kind of stuck between a rock and a hard place. The show must go on … and that’s what we’re going to do.”
Without doubt, this will come as disappointing news for longtime fans of Martin’s fantastical world. First published in 1996, A Song of Ice and Fire carved out a substantial following for its conniving characters and politics, and this popularity grew exponentially when the property made its small screen debut 15 years later in the form of Game of Thrones. Now, the two incarnations have almost reached a parity.
