Zach Galifianakis And Kristen Wiig Pull Off America’s Biggest Heist In Masterminds Teaser Trailer

When movie studios lift real-life events as inspiration for feature films, particularly when it comes to a record-breaking heist, it often underpins a serious drama. But for Jared Hess' upcoming comedy, a $20 million smash and grab -- one which proved to be one of the biggest in America history -- will serve as inspiration for the Zach Galifianakis-led Masterminds.

For the film, The Hangover fan favorite will step into the shoes of David Ghantt, a dim-witted Southerner who discovers more money than he knows what to do with after stealing the aforementioned sum from an armoured truck. Alongside Galifianakis for the romp is Bridesmaids‘ Kristen Wiig, who leads him astray and plants the devious idea in his head in the first place. Rounding out the cast are Owen Wilson, Kristen Wiig and Jason Sudeikis.

Having broke onto the directing scene with Napoleon Dynamite back in 2004, Hess certainly made a considerable first impression, followed up by the somewhat underwhelming Nacho Libre two years later. Now, though, the filmmaker is back in business with a star-studded cast and a script from Jody Hill & Danny R. McBride. But can Masterminds recapture the bizarre comedy that worked so well in Dynamite? Time will tell.

Masterminds opens nationwide on August 7.

In this action comedy based on true events, directed by Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite; Nacho Libre), David Ghantt (Zach Galifianakis) discovers the true meaning of adventure far beyond his wildest dreams. He is an uncomplicated man stuck in a monotonous life. Day in and day out he drives an armored vehicle, transporting millions of other people’s money with no escape in sight. The only glimmer of excitement is his flirtatious work crush Kelly Campbell (Kristen Wiig) who soon lures him into the scheme of a lifetime.
