Gotham To Introduce Mr. Freeze, Clayface And Mad Hatter In Second Season

Gotham has spent most of its first season delving into the backstories and origins of several of the Dark Knight’s famous rogues gallery, from Penguin, Catwoman and Riddler to Poison Ivy, Scarecrow and even the Joker. Now, we’re hearing that three more iconic foes will be making their debut in the series’ already-greenlit second season.

According to producer John Stephens, who participated in the Gotham panel at WonderCon this past weekend, those new villains are fan-favorite Victor Fries a.k.a. Mr. Freeze, shape-shifting monster Clayface, and Jervis Tetch, better known by readers as Alice in Wonderland-obsessed criminal the Mad Hatter.

As of now, there’s no telling how these foes will be introduced next season; they could get recurring arcs like the Penguin, or land small guest spots like Victor Zsasz. The producers have been teasing someone like Mr. Freeze since the show first began, so I’m guessing that there are big plans for him. Clayface is trickier to pull off on a small television budget, so perhaps we’ll meet one of his various pre-transformation alter-egos instead.

Variety’s Laura Prudom was present at the panel, and hinted at the possibility of seeing the secret Court of Owls society next season as well. Introduced in the New 52, the Court of Owls are a shadowy organization that controls Gotham City, once comprised of the locale’s richest families, including the Cobblepots and the Waynes. According to Purdom, the writers have yet to commit to the Court of Owls story, but may have planted those seeds already:

Gotham returns for the final stretch of the season on April 13th, 2015.
