Sources close to two unnamed video game websites have given their word that Sony’s Next Generation Portable (NGP) will have its name officially changed to PlayStation Vita, at E3. The rumor is that the company will unveil the new name during its June 6 press conference.

Two images (referred to as ‘prepared graphics for E3,’) were posted online, showing the portable device with the rumored name on its lower front plate. One of those websites was a Blogspot site owned by Hugo Miramontes, though he deleted the image shortly after putting it up, replacing it with an apology. Though the apology doesn’t have a specific recipient listed, Miramontes says that he’s extremely sorry and that posting the image was one of the stupidest things he’s ever done. The blog is now locked, making it unavailable for viewing.

If you recall, there were rumors about the device’s codename being Vita (or Veta,) when it was first announced. This could just end up being a bunch of talk about nothing, but it’s interesting considering the fact that there is a Sony Computer Entertainment developer website featuring the Vita title. That site is linked to Sony UK.

We’ll just have to wait until next week for Sony’s E3 press conference. Who knows what they’ll announce regarding the much-talked about hand-held device.
