Another cult classic movie earmarked for the small screen treatment has now set up shop at Paramount. The 1999 space comedy Galaxy Quest has been the subject of endless fan queries concerning a sequel, and in a roundabout way, the studio listened. According to Deadline, the network has started development on a TV series which may be a sequel, spinoff OR remake. While specifics on the deal are unreported, the trade does make mention of key members of the film’s original creative team set to return.

Writer Robert Gordon, director Dean Parisot, and producer Mark Johnson are expected to be involved in this new iteration. Whether it remakes the same story or ventures into hitherto unexplored realms of the galaxy, the enlistment of that core trio imparts a certain assuredness, as the first movie was a total knock-out.

For those unfamiliar, the original Dreamworks feature followed the comical antics of a bunch of TV show has-beens. Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman, Tony Shalhoub and Sam Rockwell play actors whose lives have become an endless cycle of fan conventions after their hit sci-fi TV series is resigned to syndication. But when a real-life alien species mistakes their episodes for actual transmissions, the gang are tasked with helping the loveable Thermians from destruction at the hands of an evil alien overlord. The film’s parting scene hinted at future expeditions for the crew, and with the years stacking up and still no sequel, this might not be what the fans want, but a Galaxy Quest TV series is still better than nothing at all, right?
