Though there are still a full three years to go before the arrival of Avengers: Infinity War – Part I, it’s almost common knowledge that Anthony and Joe Russo’s galactic sequel is going to be momentous; so momentous, in fact, that both installments in the two-part showdown will be shot entirely using IMAX cameras.

In what is to be a first for a Hollywood feature film, Marvel confirmed that production for Infinity War will take advantage of state of the art IMAX cameras – the Alexa 65, for those well versed in technical lingo – while Civil War on the other hand will have segments captured by the IMAX/ARRI 2D cameras. On the topic of Infinity War, here’s what the Russo brothers had to share about utilizing the power of the large screen format.

“The intent with the Infinity War films is to bring ten years of accumulative storytelling to an incredible climax. We felt that the best way to exploit the scale and scope required to close out the final chapter of these three phases, was to be the first films shot entirely on the IMAX/ARRI Digital camera.”

Disney has evidently taken a liking to the big-screen IMAX format, considering that Star Wars: The Force Awakens will also contain one IMAX scene. Plus, given the scale and near-unprecedented scope of Infinity War, projecting the Russo brothers’ feature on the biggest canvas possible is befitting.

According to Chris Evans, Avengers: Infinity War is likely to step in front of the cameras in the later stages of 2016 where both parts will be filmed back-to-back. It’s a production that is likely to span around 9 months in total, as the creative team engineer a fitting climax to deliver on a decade’s worth of superhero storytelling.

Marvel will dish out the first chapter in the studio’s climactic encounter when Avengers: Infinity War – Part I lands on May 4, 2018, before Infinity War – Part II wraps up the battle with the Mad Titan on May 3, 2019.
